£50 update

The recent lively discussion about the £50 note seems to have disappeared into cyberspace but I thought some people would be interested in the news that the note won't be scrapped but will instead get a redesign - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45850135

Visitors might like to read the article - it rather neatly summarises the social stigma associated with the £50 note!

Wonder how long before places stop accepting cash lol. Seems now as soon as you buy something they just assume you are using a card and ship out the card machine

Try doing a pub crawl and being in charge of the cash whip.. they look at yoy like you've 5 heads when ypu go to pay in cash😁😁

There seems to be rather a lot of things you don’t remember, Stephen.

I don't think it will make a difference, too many shops have now said for too long they don't want them. I can't see that changing and you will be better off avoiding them

The linked BBC article doesn't tell the full story about animal fats.

The new polymer notes weren’t “found to contain traces of animal fats”. From the outset, they intentionally contained no more than 0.05% of a plasticiser added to the polymer, which also helps stop them sticking together. The plasticiser is derived from triglycerides extracted from tallow (usually rendered beef fat). Similar plasticisers derived from animal fats with various compositions are added to the plastic materials used to make most credit and debit cards, mobile phones, laptops, supermarket carrier bags and many of the interior components of your car… to name but a few.

The BoE suppliers looked at coconut oil derivatives as an alternative, but they didn’t work. Palm oil derivatives did work but would have added almost £1.7 million per year to the cost of producing the £5 and £10 notes (as well as creating issues about sustainability).

Odd that they give all the good reasons for not having a £50 note and then decide to replace them anyway...

I saw three Norwegian Liverpool FC supporters in a Wetherspoons last week paying for three drinks with a £50 note! 😂
