Nice halfway point Port Isaac to LHR

We're returning our hire car to LHR on a Tuesday morning in mid-May. Any suggestions for a nice place to stop off for a lunch and walk around. We were thinking possibly Glastonbury. Thanks.

Surely if you are dropping off the car in the morning you will be at Heathrow at lunchtime not Glastonbury. Or have I misunderstood?

Salisbury if you have time. The Cathedral is spectacular and there's plenty of great places to eat including a wonderful old pub called the Haunch of Venison within walking distance of the cathedral and parking.

Are you planning to go M5, M4 or A303?

I would allow at least 4 hours for the drive - you'll need to work out what time you need to be at Heathrow and work back, you might have plenty of time - or only just enough. Can you be more specific before we start suggesting the Impossible?

Glastonbury is not really on the route so could add 40 minutes travelling plus lunch...which might make it a really bad idea.

OK-thinking about leaving Port Isaac around 10.00. Car doesn't have to be back until late evening so have flexibility there. Although now that I'm thinking about it, stopping for lunch might put us at Heathrow right around 5:00pm, which might not be great. Flexible around routes-any advantages to either one?

Right, new information changes everything. If you have say 8 hours then the world opens up!

There was an earlier suggestion of Salisbury which really looks useful with these timings. Try to set off by 9.30 and you'll be there for 1pm, spend 3 hours and then on the way to Heathrow and in by 6pm.... how does that look?

Or, before Salisbury, Sherborne, in North Dorset.

Lovely small historic town: warm yellow stone, as pretty as the Cotswold towns. Basically: 2 shopping streets with lots of cafes and restaurants, an Abbey, a small market square and a small park, all in a compact area for a pleasant stroll. Also has 2 small castles, the ruined one closest, but you might not have time for those.
