Advice to get from Plymouth to Port Isaacweekday afternoon

Excited to be on an escorted tour that stops in Plymouth for 2 weekday nights in May. We have an afternoon free and really want to see Port Isacc for Doc Martin (It looks like they would be filming),

Google maps says its a little over an hour to get there so it looks like we could do it. Any advice on renting a car or getting a ride up & back for around 5hrs. We would also love to see Tintagal.

Thanks in advance.

If you have only an afternoon free then that is not long enough what with getting to the car hire, hiring the car , finding your way to Port Isaac, parking etc.

I was hoping there is an uber like driver we could pay for 4 hrs. We would be happy seeing port isaac for 1hr.

This thread gives some ideas on finding a driver. Blue badge guides, private operators. Google "taxi services Plymouth" and read any web-sites that are identified. For example Looe Taxi Office (may be okay for you) will hire for an afternoon. Plymouth Taxi services offer Guided Tours (no recommendation).

The difficulty with this type of request is that no-one local will have ever done it, and the rare tourist who has isn't monitoring the forum.

AA Route Planner gives a much more realistic, but still optimistic, 1hr 20 min Plymouth - Port Isaac. A round trip Plymouth - Port Iaaac - Tintagel - Plymouth @ 3 hours. You can't see Tintagel Castle without quite a long walk or Landrover service, at least 2 hours required IMO.

Also bear in mind that if filming is going on then it's going to be a LOT busier than it normally is (and that's busy enough) so it will take longer to actually get into Port Isaac, that's if you even can find anywhere to park, so unless you start early in the morning, then I would forget it.

You are right. We could go for an hour in port isaac and nothing else but we'd be happy!

My best advice is to leave as early as you can in the morning and aim to get to Port Isaac early as well. If you book a taxi from Plymouth to take you there then look on line to find another taxi to bring you back rather than has this one hang around and charge you. Use the visit cornwall website to find a map of nearby towns and search on taxi. book it in advance and book a pick up point, don't leave it until the day.

just stick with Port Isaac don't try and combine with anything else. Cornwall is a place to be slow paced!

the reason for some of the responses on this forum is that having a driver like this isn't something that the brits on holidays in the UK would normally do and that's why its hard to find someone to do it.

It always surprises me that some enterprising person hasn't leapt in to fill this gap.

Hiring a car is too time consuming so go with the taxi and I hope you have a great time with fingers crossed that you get to see some filming.

Just a thought but you you could try contacting the Plymouth tourist information office to see of they know anyone licenced to do such a trip. A driver coming from Cornwall would have to do 4 journeys.

<<It always surprises me that some enterprising person hasn't leapt in to fill this gap.>> Please see post #3. There are several people offering formal tours, and, local to Wringworthy, Looe Taxis offer driver services, please see their web-site. The demand is so intermittent and seasonal it can't support a full time business. There used to be shuttle bus service Looe- Eden Project, which stopped after a couple of years. A local tourism business then started an ad-hoc mini-bus service (I was offered the drivers job), just didn't work. Taxis/ Private hire perform the job perfectly well, albeit at a price which has to be realistic.
