Hen do, fancy dress

Hi, we're coming to Chester in November for my sisters hen do. We aren't really ones for clubbing these days, we do prefer a bar with music. We want to do fancy dress but have read that this isn't really the thing to do in Chester. It'll be Christmas themed so Santa will be there, probably elves, snowmen, Christmas jumpers etc. Are we better off playing it safe and putting our Sunday bests on or can we risk it? Don't want to go all that way to end up in a Spoons when there's 2 to choose from on our own doorstep!

Thank you :)

Yes, definitely safer to keep to smart casual. Chester has lots of great bars and pubs and the the city wants to be a place for everyone to enjoy, daytime or evening , but also tries to preserve the atmosphere that most visitors and residents expect of a small historic city. For that reason large groups or those in fancy dress ( even sashes in many cases) are discouraged or even refused entry. Those wanting to ‘ let their hair down’ usually prefer a bigger city such as Liverpool or Manchester.

Hope you still decide to come to Chester. You will have a great time here without the need for fancy dress

How late in November?

If it's late, I don't see this being a real issue at all.

It’s not the Christmas theme it is the fancy dress that is discouraged in general

Where did you read this?

On previous Tripadvisor forums probably. There will be difficulty getting into some places if there is a lot of dressing up and silliness. Liverpool is a better place for that.

"Liverpool is a better place for that."

Please don't encourage more drunken hen and stag groups to go to Liverpool!

I wish more bars and pubs would follow what popular bar, Alma De Cuba have done. From their website:

Smart casual

NO fancy dress

NO hen party paraphernalia

NO trainers

NO hoodies

NO sportswear
