Is it worth to travel to see monarchs right now?

This is 11/26/13. We were planning to travel to Michoacán this week and Thanksgiving weekend to visit the monarch butterfly sanctuary. But I'm reading and hearing that the number of butterflies was dropped dramatically, that only a small fraction of what is usually there by now have shown up. I wonder if it's worth the trip now. Thanks.

You should go, there might not be any in the near future.

Writing on January 19. Does anyone know if more butterflies have arrived, now that it is a little later in the season. We have we had a lot of rain/humidity on the Coast north of Puerto Vallarta, and wondering how the weather has been in Michoacan. Any info will be appreciated.

We did visit the end of November. The driver and the guide told us, plus what I've read, that the butterflies arrive over a short period of time, 2-3 weeks max. Stragglers arriving weeks or months later, doesn't seem to happen. We did see butterflies, but again, the driver and guide kept telling us that the numbers were much smaller than previous years. We didn't see a single tree trunk covered with butterflies. There were no "swarms". They were not carpeting the ground. Yes, they were there, some on the branches or on small clumps on the edges of puddles. Many were flying around, but we saw nothing that resembled photos, videos and documentaries. We left with mixed feelings. Seeing them was still an awe-inspiring experience, but we were also sad that their population at the time was so much smaller than in previous years.

I have visited many times since 2002 and on that first visit there were carpets of dead butterflies due to an extremely cold winter. Each subsequent year we had to climb higher in the mountains to see the clumps, until 2 years ago when we visited a little later during the beginning of March and had the best experience ever with millions of the butterflies hanging, flying and it was incredible. This year has again been a colder winter, so it will be interesting to see what we find!

There are a number of specialist websites that post regular updates. Use of a search engine will find them. the one I know is:

I checked a number of websites and no useful information to be found (or that I can find). Only that the numbers are down ;the corn crop habitats are reduced by half.

What I really want to know if it will be worthwhile to make the trek to see! Will there still be lots of Monarchs. We plan to go to the El Rosario on Feb 14,2014.

Thanks for any recent reports.
