Secrets Carpi vs. Royal Hideway?

We're heading off to beautiful Mexico for our 10-year anniversary. I thought I had completely decided to go to Secrets Capri. However a friend is going to Royal Hideaway and has me reconsidering. Any opinions out there?

One sticking point I have is that I can't find anything that says Royal Hideaway has a swim-up bar...sounds funny, I know, but it's a must-have for my dear husband, lol. Can anyone tell me if there is one or not?

Thanks for the help!

Morning,

My husband and I just returned from the RH. Our second visit and even better than the first. They do not have a swim up bar, however when you are in the infinity pool and hang over the side, they deliver drinks to you in the pool.

Have never stayed at Secrets but have heard a lot of good things.

Good Luck with your choice

I have been to Secrets once, RH four times, and heading back to RH in 5/07. Secrets is a very nice resort, but RH is in a class by itself. No swimup bar, but we found that to be a downside to Secrets. The same people hogged it every day and it was interesting to watch them....three hours and never got out to use the restroom.

At RH, they bring you a refill before you've finished your first drink. I can't say enough about RH. Again, Secrets is a nice resort but there is a reason it's approximately $1K-1,500 cheaper than RH. I also feel that the location and beach of Secrets is much less desirable than RH. Playa is a $4 cab ride from RH (takes all of 2 minutes) and Capri is an $18 cab ride.

We just returned from getting married at Secrets Capri and we are very happy we choose Capri.

We had booked and paid for our trip to RH in march and after reading about the complants about the pool chair situation and realizing they did not have ocean front or even ocean view rooms we canceled and rebooked at Capri.

I know RH has the greatest food and service in the world, but they couldn't have been any more attentive at Capri.

The food was very good, we've had better at resorts before but not at an AI.

They come around the pool and beach all day for food and drink orders, and we didn't notice the same people everyday at the pool bar but we did notice people getting out of the pool from time to time.

The beaches at both resorts leave a lot to be desired but look at the pictures and you can tell for yourself which looks better.

I'm sure that RH is the best there is but we were more then happy with everything about Capri and would go back in a heart beat.

I too and trying to decide on whether to take my husband to Secrets, RH or Royal Porto Real to celebrate his 50th birthday. I know that Royal Porto Real is now an Adults Only AI & is the less expensive of the 2. Which would be better resort for us ? I am 38 yrs old & we do like to drink around, or preferrably in the pool. Want some night time entertainment, but don't want a resort w/ bunch of 20 somethings getting loaded. Don't mind buffets, but would like a few al carte restaurants to choose from. How far are these resorts from airport ?? Close proximity to PDC is also important. Thanks for your suggestions.

FYI.........

Royal Hideaway does have ocean view rooms. Not all rooms have ocean views, but they do have ocean view rooms.

If you can afford it, the Royal Hideaway is an easy choice over Secrets.

IslandGirl68,

RH is much closer to Playa - $4 cab ride, takes two minutes. Secrets is much further north - $18 cabe ride, and approximately twenty minutes.

RH has 6 a la carte restaurants. There is a buffet in the morning at Spices (fabulous but not a lot of variation) and Ventanas has a sit down breakfast. At lunch, you can have a wonderful sit down lunch at Spices or eat from the poolside restaurant.

At RH, there are varied things to do at the Allegro, casino night, kareoke night, and they have live music on some nights. It is not loud and crazy, but it is fun. We always enjoy cocktails at Allegro outside every night before heading to dinner (we eat late 8:30 to 9:00). After dinner, we're usually exhausted from the day and head back to the room.

Is Allegro their lounge at RH ? Is there a dress code in the restaurants ? Actually like to dress-up for dinners most nights. I see that they have a theatre, what types of shows do they have ? Any entertainment at the beach? I've heard not the place to go if looking for excitement, but sounds like just enough to do in the evenings.

Yes, Allegro is the lounge/bar. You can sit inside but they have several tables outside. Who wants to sit inside when you're in Mexico?? One night, they had a gentleman that played the harp and it was so romantic.

Yes, dress up. I always take evening gowns and cocktail dresses. Please remember that men are not allowed to wear open type shoes such as sandals. I love dressing up. If you'd like some pics, I'd be happy to send if you give me your email. I'm telling you - you can't go wrong. I just booked a week in May (high season) for seven nights under $4K - unbelievable.
