Should I take the LDW insurance for the rental car

My auto insurance does not extend to an overseas territory. Will be using a Capital One MC, and they offer SOME coverage. Just really leary of not taking the coverage offered at Grace Bay Car Rentals...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

The most important bit of knowledge I have gleamed from Dr. Jim is GET THE LDW INSURANCE. Its the best $9.95 we've spent.

3 claims~~3 vans backing into things~~$3000 received in payments. A darn good deal to me being on the Island renting a vehicle. I've got the claim procedure down pretty good now. Dr. Jim

We always get it. Luckily, we have never had to use it.

Just for a balanced view, I'll take the contrary position....

I've been renting cars for about 50 years for both business and pleasure and have rented hundreds of times for probably 4 - 5 years or more of rental time. I have never taken LDW and have never had an occasion when I could have made a claim if I had it. If you include interest on the money I've saved, I could probably buy a whole new car with the savings. I refuse to rent from any company that requires LDW.

LDW is a huge profit for the rental companies; over the long term you will pay much more for the coverage than you will collect (although there may be some exceptions, such as Dr Jim).

If the "peace of mind" is worth the cost of LDW, then go for it, but do not expect to save any $$ by buying it.

We purchase it. I also recommend buying it with GBCar. If anything at all happens, you pay the 350$ deductible and walk away with another rental. No hassle.

Keep in mind that the coverage does not cover smashed windows and slashed tires. Keep windows open just a tad and doors unlocked. They state this in the contract.

Are accidents pretty common? Will have the rental for the duration of the vacation...

I'm with AmateurGO. We've never signed up for the extra coverage in all our travels through North America. In TCI we use the coverage through AmEx.

I've never bought it ever. My credit card requires that I decline the "collision damage waiver (CDW/LDW) option" at the rental car agency as a condition of covering the me under the "Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver". It is valid worldwide.
