Hands down BEST place to stay???

My finace and I are trying to plan our honeymoon for May of next year. We're both in our mid-twenties and don't mind a bit of a walk to the beach.....but a wonderful view is a MUST. Cane Garden Bay seems to have the most accomodations, but I fear that it will be super crowded. I'm looking for a laid back, somewhat private place that is a short walk to the beach with a beautiful view. We're not seeking luxury, just a clean, comfortable place to stay, as we'll be outside until dark each day. We plan to rent a jeep to explore the island and don't mind a 10 minute drive to restaurants and the grocery store. HELP!! I need some suggestions. I like Lighthouse Villas, but again worry that CGB may be more crowded than we woudl like.

What in the world type of response is that??? Please ignore the above commenter...

Are you preferring a private villa with a view? A locally owned hotel? What is your budget like? Fort Recovery has a great view and is on a private beach, and meets your criteria. Sugar Mill would also meet your criteria, it's set back on the hill overlooking their small beach. Both are within good distance from restaurants and shops (10-15mins).

We're trying to find an affordable place to extend our honeymoon to 2 weeks rather than one. I have looked at both you mentioned, but I'm willing to sacrafice a little "luxury" for a longer stay. I like Lighthouse Villas and also Agape Cottages. There are just so many choices it's hard to decide. A private villa would be nice, but I imagine they are a little more expensive that a local hotel or B&B. Everything I read about Myett's talks about all of the cruise ships and from what I understand Sebastian's beach is rocky and not a swimming beach. Between Lighthouse and Agape, which would you choose?

Between Agape and Lighthouse, you might read Trip Advisor reviews on both to help you make up your mind. Either way, take ear plugs for sleeping at night. The roosters make their move pretty early in the morning.

I have read great reviews of both. From what I have read the roosters are all over the island. Is that the case? We'll be up by 6:30 everyday and I'm sure the rum will help us sleep through their "singing" in the night.

Yes there are roosters everywhere even in Road Town! Lighthouse Villas are lovely and really the area could never be called crowded unless on the odd day when there are cruise ship passengers on the beach for a couple of hours. I have stayed at Long Bay and it's lovely - I stayed there last year for 2 weeks and the beach there is lovely - very peaceful but with facilities so that may suit you. I will be staying at Myetts, Cane Garden Bay, in November for a week so will be able to let you know more about the area then. The beach there is lovely.

As someone else mentioned, the Sugar Mill looks lovely but a tiny beach there so you would probably want to rent a car for the duration of your stay if you stayed there.

That's good to know. After reading some reviews I was afraid the beach was going to be packed from sun up to sun down. So, Cane Garden Bay may be the place to stay then. If cruise ships are in we can just day trip to another beach.

We stayed at Shan's Bungalow, a private villa on Cane Garden Bay. We toured the entire island, including Sugar Mill and Lighthouse Inn. Hands down, the BEST place to stay is Shan's. It has so much history and was completely remodeled in 2005, it reminded my wife of a morocan palace. It is private, new and fancy interior. And it's on teh quite part of Cane Garden with a beautiful beach about 10 steps out the door. The beach in Cane Garden is only second in BVI to White Bay on JVD.

The Lighthouse Inn was about 1 block west and looks new. Sugar Mill looks great and has the BEST food on the island, but has a really little beach on Apple Bay, surrounded by rocks, and you much take a taxi everywhere except if you are going to Bomba Shack.

We will return to Cane Garden Bay and Shan's. I made the right choice then, and will again.

PS - the escort, Sam, is a local taxi drive who is plugged into everything on the island, incl. political. If you want to know something or go somewhere, call him.

The views at Fort Recovery are breathtaking. No matter how many times my husband and I have stayed there, every nite we are sitting on our balcony taking in the beautiful sunsets and mountains. Have been to Cane Garden Bay beach and area 4 times and didn't care for it too much. Too many people, too commercialized. It's not a true representation of the island of Tortola. Fort Recovery has an intimate atmosphere, quiet, and you feel like home. Also, their restaurant is not open to the general public, only to guests. So to meet your requirement of "a wonderful view is a must" then you need to stay at Fort Recovery.
