Do we need to change money into Bonaire currency or is the $US accepted?
The US dollar is accepted
Matter of fact, as of about 1.5 years ago, the US dollar is the official currency of Bonaire. Seems a little strange, given the political structure of Bonaire, but the US dollar is the official/preferred currency.
A few notes to keep in mind. Pennies are not particularly popular in Bonaire and some stores will not take them. Not a problem since everything is done in 5 cent increments -- no 99 cent specials there! Some of the smaller snack stands and stores do not like to take $100.00 bills so smaller bills are a good idea. Additionally, there is a one dollar coin that is unique to Bonaire. It is official US currency but has Bonaire on the face. Don't be surprised if you get one as part of your change.
I'm glad I read this post. It's been three years since we've been there and are going next week. Does this mean that menus and grocery, and gift shop items are now listed as UDS instead of NAF?
@ScubaLyons, yes all prices are now in US dollars. You will find things more expensive than three years ago also.
Thanks so much, bluewaterdiva! Just looked at a few menus - yikes! The prices really have jumped.
