Husband dives, I do not. Suggestions for a place to stay?

Planning on early December. Husband dives, I do not. Any suggestions for where to stay where he will have the best chance of finding a shore dive buddy? We do NOT want to be near the cruise ship port or under the runway, and hopefully be near a strip of beach where I can zone out reading.

Co-workers have given us both very conflicting advice.

How about a place like the belmar that has a dive operation on-site and a pool for you. We stayed there last year and we really liked it.

Belmar is nice... we have friends we have visited there a couple of times, but I don't remember any real beach there or close by. They are associated with one of the local dive outfits so your husband could probably find a buddy.

The dive resorts, like Capt. Don and Buddy Dive, would be almost sure to find a buddy, but again, not much in the say of a beach or other entertainment within easy walking distance.

I'd consider the Plaza resort. They have a nice beach setup with bar service close by, some basic beach toys, and it is within reasonable walking distance of town. They might get a few more people on the beach on Cruise ship days, but I don't think it would be a problem in early December. On cruise ship days it is fun to take a walk along the docks and through town to see what it is like, as long as you can then retreat to the calm of your resort. The Plaza does have an on-site dive operation as well as a couple of others within a very short walk. The Divi offers much the same things, but might be a bit too close to the cruise ship madness.

I second Plaza for the beach set up for you as that is hard to find. I think finding a dive buddy will not be too hard as there are so many divers on island.

We always stay at Carib Inn, right up the street. Small inn with pool, dock, best dive op, seaside porch, and small natural beach, but it is small. As there are fewer guests, it migjt be harder to pair up, but the people who stay tthere are usually repeat customers and very friendly, so still do not think he would have a problem.

Depends on tje setting you are looking for, a larger resort type or smaller scale inn

Hope that helps

Finding a shore dive buddy is not as easy as a boat dive buddy. Shore divers typically load their trucks in the morning and set out for the day to do multiple dives. I'd certainly be skeptical of anyone allowing me to tag along for a full day of diving. Plus, you're at their mercy for start and stop times. When boat diving it's easier to be paired up with another diver or group. There's usually someone else, well, in the same boat. You can always post on scubaboard and bonairetalk that you're looking for a buddy for the week; or, hire a local guide or dive master.

Agree with cockwheat that it will def be harder to find a buddy shore diving than boat diving. Perhaps, you could look at VIP diving or the hotel of your choice dive shop and see if they have anyone else in the same predicament. Might be more common than we know??

When we were at Carib Inn last, we met a man diving alone and would have had no problem going out along with him. We sat every night together at the pool with him and his wife and got along fine. That might be the benefit of the smaller place, easier to get to know the people.

Hi. My husband dives and I do not. We're going back to Divi Flamingo. There your husband can dive and you can chillax. Not on top of the cruise ships and a short walk into town. We rented a little pick up and explored the island. Check out their site and enjoy! Bonaire is beautiful!

Also I was able to go out on the boat and snorkel while he was diving and you can snorkel right off the pier there. For ease of mind I use a wrap around life strip up under my arms so I can relax and watch the fish and coral.

I'm staying at Don's Habitat this year. I am taking 27 yr old grandson to Bonaire and he is dive certified. From past trips to Bonaire I sort of drifted to Don;s - great restaurant - it just seems like the best dive atmosphere on the island so he could find someone to buddy with. I am going Dec 3 to 10 and grandson is available - He is a marine biologist instructor at Catalina Island Marine Institute, I will be snorkeling or reading .by the pool there like you. Have previously stayed at Divi which was okay and they do have diving offered there but Don's is the go to place to be for diving and nicer than the Divi.

We stay at Sand Dollar condos they have a pool and a small beach area. As for a dive buddy go to Scuba board and post. Many divers find buddies that way. Be sure to list his experience level and dive desires. We are a friendly bunch of slightly crazed divers
