How far is Warwick Long Bay from Kings Wharf? Whats the best way to get there? Are the waters generally calm?
WARWICK LONG BAY is located along Bermuda's magnificent south shore, approx. ten(10) miles east, from the landward end of your King's/Heritage Wharf cruise ship pier at Dockyard. It will be a very pleasant 35-40 minute ride via a #7--Dockyard-Via South Shore Beaches-Hamilton public bus route...30-35 minutes via taxi or rental motor scooter. As a general rule-of-thumb, estimate Bermuda taxi fares at $1 per minute.
The water here will tend to be moderate surf under most conditions and not calm (though calm-er at low tide). There is also a sharp-ish 'drop-off' relayively close in to the beach.
There is a relatively short path from the road above down to this long (1/2 mile or more) thin strand. These are sand paths across the dunes...so NOT very conducive to pushing a wheel chair through. Thoug, if you can dispense with the wheel chair for a short distance along sandy paths through sand dunes (approx. 200-300 yards)...just to the west (to your right as you face the ocean) of Warwick Long Bay is JOBSON'S COVE. Jobson's Cove is a small, entirely well sheltered, perfectly calm '..natural pool..' created by a crenellation of the rocky south shore.
P.S....when you ask for "..the best way..." it might be well if you included the not-so-minor-details of '..special needs..'.Edited: 15 April 2011, 23:52
Thanks for all the helpful info. Do you live in Bermuda?
I actually think a few (including my cousin in the wheel chair) will be taking a tour. So a short sand walk would be doable.
Is there a sharp drop off in Jobsons cove?
>>>Is there a sharp drop off in Jobsons cove?<<<
NO...there is no sort of 'drop-off' at all. This is a gentle, '..natural pool..'...perhaps 20 x 30 yards in area with a relatively shallow, soft-sand bottom. 3/4 of the circumference is rock and 1/4 gentle, sandy beach. This beach is very popular with the parents of young children
JOBSON'S COVE may be one of the most photographed and '..postcard-ed..' beaches in Bermuda. For a better idea of what it looks like (and many other Bermuda beaches that you know or hear of), take the time to do a simple Google IMAGE search for "..Jobson's Cove, Bermuda.." (or 'Warwick Long Bay, Bermuda'...or..John Smith Bay, Bermuda'...or...'Tobacco Bay, Bermuda', et al) and judge for yourself. Just that quick 'n easy.
Don't be put off by access down sandy paths. There is a paved road down to the beach at the jobsons cove end which is used by all the taxi drivers. There is a small car park and scooter park. Access to the beach is approximately 20-30 metres walk, shortest, but then it's as far as you want to go. Jobsons is about 200 metres west. We have just returned having stayed in Clairfont Apts a short walk across the main road from Warick Long beach. Swam there every day, brilliant!
