supermarkets in Warwick

my parents are in the 60s/70s and are thinking of staying at the Clairfont Apartments next year for a month. does anyone know if there are any cheap grocery stores within walking distance of the Clairfont? since I understand there are no car rentals in Bermuda, and I know they will not want to eat every dinner out for a month, I was wondering how easy it would be to do their grocery shopping so that they could fix some of their own dinners in the apt. thanks for your help!

There are no "..cheap grocery stores.." in Bermuda. On average grocerey prices will run approx. 1/3 more than in the US. Nor are there any grocery stores or supermarkets within reasonable walking distance of CLAIRFONT APARTMENTS. The property is located at 6 Warwickshire Road...situated approx. 100-150 yards back in (north) from the South Road the regular bus stop for the #7-Hamilton-Dockyard route stop.

The most convenient supermarkets to CLAIRFONT, via public transportation, will be the MODERN MART-- www.marketplace.bm/marketplace/locations.jsp --located approx 15 mins. away (via #7 bus) on the South Road (east), between Clairfont and downtown Hamilton.....or either the SOMERSET MARKETPLACE-- www.marketplace.bm/marketplace/locations.jsp --located approx. 30 mins. away (via #7 bus) on the Somerset Road (west) between Clairfont and Dockyard...or the ARNOLD'S MARKET in the same immediate area along the Somerset Road. In all cases, there are regular bus stops at each supermarket location.

There are other supermarkets located closer to Clairfont, along the Middle Road in Warwick and Southampton parishes...but none are within reasonable walking distance (especially carrying grocery bags) or directly accessible via bus from Clairfont. These other supermarkets--MARKETPLACE, LINDO'S, WHITE'S--are relatively close and easily accessible via short taxi ride to or from Clairfont.

LINDO'S--

WHITE'S--

MILE'S MARKET--

If your parents will be riding public transportation, there is a MARKETPLACE supermarket in downtown Hamilton, a couple of blocks east of the main bus terminal...and a MILE'S MARKET, a couple of blocks west of the main ferry terminal in downtown Hamilton....to pick up groceries and sundries on their way back to Clairfont.

Wow, thanks for your post - that's really very helpful! If I could ask one quick follow up question, if my parents were to take taxis to go to the closest grocery stores, how much do you think that would cost each way? Ten U.S. dollars or so? Thanks again!

$10 or so (within a buck or two) would be about right....to the Lindo's, White's or Marketplace (Heron Bay) supermarkets up on the Middle Road.

What many people who rent self-catering accommodations do is to bring along some 'basics' with them...meats (allowed up to 50 lbs. frozen)...small quantities of their favorite herbs & spices...coffee...any particular/peculiar dietary items, etc.

Upon arrival, they would probably make a run to a supermarket to stock 'basics' in the larder. After this, they will find that all of Bermuda's supermarkets are located either directly on public bus routes (with bus stops at the markets) or very near to them...so that picking up something to prepare for dinner that evening or breakfast the following morning isn't really that big a deal.

It's also worth noting that most supermarkets have Deli and Prepared Foods sections where they can pick up prepared dishes/dinners to take-home with 'em. Perhaps the best Deli & Prepared Foods section in Bermuda will be the one at MILE'S MARKET in downtown Hamilton. Prices ain't cheap here...but the take-out foods from here are wonderful. The MarketPlace's SHOPPING CENTRE in downtown Hamilton, located a couple of blocks east along Victoria Street from the main bus terminal (next to City Hall) also has a pretty good Prepared Foods section.

Ther is also a large, new ARNOLD'S MARKET location/store, located along the South Road (nr: Cobb's Hill Rd/SurfSide Hotel..along the #7 bus route), just over the 'line' Paget/ Warwick parish line. The new store has been standing there, completed..but curiously vacant..for about a year. Perhaps by next year it will finally open.

Just a note about them staying for a month--the normal visitor stay in Bermuda is 21 days, but they can apply for an extension. Here is the website where they can read all about Bermuda immigration and contact them for the paperwork necessary! www.immigration.gov.bm/portal/server.pt (contact information can be found at http://www.gov.bm/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=214&&PageID=753&mode=2&in_hi_userid=2&cached=true)
