camping in the valley of 10,000 smokes

We are an Anchorage party of 8 planning to visit the valley of 10,000 smokes at the end of August and we're wondering about where to camp not too far from the Griggs visitor center. We would like to establish a base camp not to far from Griggs and do day hikes from there. Any input is appreciated.

I have camped at The Baked Mountain Huts and it is a nice central location for exploring but it is about 10 miles from the VC. I think if you would like to camp near the VC you should ask a Ranger upon arrival what would be the best location. I am not sure if you need to be a specific distance from the VC or not but you should ask. Be aware that there are no trees to hang your food from and you should carry bear proof containers. Most bears should be down in the rivers/lakes eating so hopefully your encounters should be minimal but always be prepared.
