Mixed Drink with Root Beer?

We are at a restaurant last night, when a person at another table requested a root beer. The waiter apologized and responded that they don't have any root beer. My wife said that it was surprising that there wasn't any at the bar. My reply: "Why? What use would a bar have for root beer?"

Between us we could not think of a mixed drink that includes root beer. We are not big drinkers, and certainly don't keep up with current drinking trends. So I thought I would ask. Does anyone know of any popular (or maybe not popular any more) mixed drinks made with root beer? Do you actually order this drink?

Interesting question.

Since you asked, I'm sitting here scratching my head and cannot think of a single mixed drink or cocktail that uses root beer (but I'm not a big cocktail drinker).

Further thought makes me wonder if the taste of root beer is too distinctive and quite metallic, which may not lend itself to mixing with many spirits, and I cannot see it working with fruity flavours too well, either.

Root beer is one of those drinks that has not fared well outside of North America. I cannot think of anywhere here in the UK where I could buy it but I guess London has some expat or specialist stores that might sell it, and I guess there are online suppliers who may deliver to any part of the country.

I was semi raised on it and actually like it. Even in the USA it can be hard to find other than fast food places with fountain machines that dispense A&W or Barqs, and we tend not to eat in those kinds of places. Dr Pepper is not the same to me! MrSWT first tasted it as an adult and hated it.

Some craft and micro breweries sell an alcoholic version, though. The few I've tried were delicious!

In Las Vegas adult milkshakes have been popular in pub-like restaurants. I would guess that they also have adult versions of the root beer float.

I don't think root beer is as popular as it was when I was younger. Although if you check top scale stores, you will find smaller companies version, similar to craft beers.

Root Beer?

I can so recall in the early 50's going to a drive-in & having a Root Beer float... Heavenly.

Yuk from me on those root beer cocktails, but trust you, SEBESZ, to know the so called Hungarian one, of course! The only cocktail I've come across using Bailey's has a name that I don't think I could put on a public forum! ;-)

Swan’s Brew Pub, Victoria, BC (spring, 2016)

The setting - we're in a brew pub — my lady had been craving something with 'root beer' -- to our surprise, listed on the menu was - “root beer float, with stout” — she loved it!! :-)

Worked at a liquor store and displayed all kinds of stuff. I remember stocking root beer schnapps. Never tried it. Ginger beer is good for a Dark and Stormy. Should be made with Goslings Dark Rum.

Bars stock what sells. Or what they have room for. Also along that line bars/restaurants stock what fits with their theme. If you go to an upscale Mexican restaurant you might have a large selection of Tequila. Or if you go to a high end steak house you might find more bourbons or scotch. You probably wouldn't find a large selection of fruity flavored vodkas or whip creme flavored vodka.

Root beer and orange soda are not too popular anymore (well at least not in larger cities on the coasts). You might be able to find "Not Your Fathers Root Beer" https://www.thrillist.com/drink/nation/hard-…
