As what you want to know is not a general food and travel enquiry but specific to Rome, the best place on these forums to ask that kind of question is on the Rome destination forum. Here's the link.

When you ask for help, rather than use vague expressions like mid range, give an actual budget range in Euros for relevant advice. Also tell them what kind of cuisine you seek and define what sort of restaurant would feel 'nice' and celebratory in your eyes. There is no such thing as 'Italian' cuisine, it's very regional, BTW.

Adding to SWT's post, you may also want to mention whereabout would you be hanging out during the day. Rome has a lot of attractions and not a small city, it would make sense to dine somewhere near Pantheon if thats where you would be rather than heading out to other areas for lunch. If you are looking for recommendation for dinner for the 50th birthday celebration you want to mention that too.

Looks like you never posted on the Rome forum. i'm a Rome Destination Expert, and I just found this by chance.

October is still high season, and many restaurants are small and would have a hard time seating a large group without advance notice. So, you are going to need to do some research and make a reservation. Note that for a very large group (you don't say how many, but 10 or more people may start to get into this category) you may be expected to pay a deposit and you may have a limited menu -- it will depend on the individual restaurant.

Near the Vatican is a good place, reasonably priced, called Il Sorpasso: http://sorpasso.info/home-page/ Menu here (although I can't vouch for how recent it is): https:/…menu

On one of Rome's prettiest streets -- Via Margutta, near Piazza del Popolo and within easy walking distance of the Spanish Steps -- is Babette: http://www.babetteristorante.it/home-page_en/ Menu here (again, not sure how recent it is): https:/…menu

Another place good for a group (I had my casual wedding reception there) is near Piazza Venezia, hidden away in a tiny piazza: https://www.latavernadegliamici.net/en/

The places I listed are what I call reasonably priced .... but not clear what your budget is. Well, hope this helps for a start.
