Solo traveler looking to relax, and meet people

Hi all,

I'm a 34-year-old female looking to plan a near-term vacations as a solo traveler for the first time (I'm nervous!) and am hoping to get some recommendations.

I'm looking for a relaxing beach vacation (likely Carribean) where I can enjoy the beach and maybe some spa services, but also enjoy some good conversation with other singles over drinks, dinner, etc. I do NOT want a place that's ALL couples, or anything wild like Hedonism.

Any suggestions?

I have my favorite spots, but for me it's not always about the location but the activities - where you can seek out other people with common interests. Saying that, a good location with a mix of singles, couples, families, and friends is Cancun. I've been there many times. Others have commented on the board that Barbados and Belize also fit this, especially you're looking for a scuba trip.

Look into some of the all inclusive resorts on Jamaica.

Also consider Canyon Ranch at Tucson. I know, there isn't a beach, but I have had really good times at Canyon Ranch.

Warm weather

Nice pools

Great single activities

Healthy

Captains tables available for dinner

Friendly people

Exercise options

I would at least take a look at this option.

Good luck :)

I'm in the same boat as you. 36 year old male that is going to be traveling solo and would also like to avoid too many couples. Unlike you, I just picked the best bang for the buck all inclusive I could find (Punta Cana) and am hoping for the best. Hopefully my impulsiveness doesn't work against me!

The Club Med on Provodenciales, Turks and Caicos gets pretty good reviews on the T & C Forum. It doesn't permit children and as it has lots of activities (rather than lots of candle-lit romance) so you will mix with fellow travellers.

When I stayed on Provo I wasn't looking to socialise, so I stayed at the Sands, which was lovely, but I did find I met people over breakfast at the Salt Mills cafe, but that was probably too random for you.

I don't think the Club Med is big on luxury, so you might have to go elsewhere for the massages, but I thought T & C was fascinating and friendly.

However, if you like clubbing, it is not a good place for that and Ambergris Caye might suit you better.

Hsve a look at the Provodenciales Forum and the Forum for Belize.

I strongly suggest Isla Mujeres, just off the coast of Cancun. It is small, safe and a haven for solo travellers. I have been there twice in the last year, as a solo female traveller and I'm planning to go back in November. There are many places to stay, from $35 US a night and up. It boasts one of the 10 best beaches in the world, Playa Norte. The selection of restaurants is outstanding and it's very cheap to eat and drink there. If you are open to meeting people, you will. There is a hostel called Poc-NA that hosts a beach party every night and there are people of all ages. Check out the forum on this website or www.isla-mujeres.net for info. If you have any questions you can PM me.

Club Med is easy. You pay for the trip, then you don't have nothing to do, everything is organized.

I've been to Club Med in the Bahamas, but it was a long time ago. They are supposed to be more upscale now, but I can't say as my stay at the Club was 12 years ago.

I second the recommendation for Club Med Turks and Caicos. It's a mixture of couples and singles, the beach is gorgeous, the buffet restaurant has larger tables and a hostess seats you with others. That makes it much easier to strike up conversations during dinner.

To the last poster: Uganda and Zanzibar are a long ways from the Caribbean, as mentioned in the original post.
