Using a new Esta after old one expires - fast pass queue

Hi my son had an ESTA 6 years ago for a visit to California, he has a new ESTA for a trip to Florida next month, is he permitted to use the fast security lane when connecting on a flight? A friend said as he has previously had an ESTa that he could use this lane, thanks

Friend is talking rubbish. Fast security lanes are determined by the airport as a means of screwing more money out of the GP.

ESTAs have nothing to do with TSA Pre-check lanes. Are you talking about using the APC machines at immigration?

Fast track security is for those with TSA Pre-check, Clear and sometimes those flying in domestic Frist Class get a shorter queue.

As your son is returning on an ESTA he may use the APC kiosks instead of queuing up at immigration.

How long does he have for this connection?

Since his fingerprint is in the system, he can use the machines.

Alanrow- I'd be interested in hearing how anyone makes money on something that has no cost 🙄

In most countries you pay for fast security lanes. It doesn't depend on having an ESTA or some form of pre-clearance.

TSA pre-check and Clear both cost money.

Anyone with an ESTA can now, I believe, use APC. From the CBP website:

"APC kiosks can be utilized by U.S. citizens, U.S. legal permanent residents, Canadian citizens, travelers utilizing ESTA (Visa Waiver Program), and travelers entering with a B1/B2 or D visa."

Bingo. The APC machines are the relevant key here. Pre-check is irrelevant.

Further, for more useful info, it would help us to know which airport he's changing planes at, which airline(s) and how long he has from scheduled arrival to the next departure time, for a view of whether there's enough time.

Personally, I've had rather mixed experiences in the last couple of years with the APC machines, in terms of whether they've helped get me through the airport any faster. With most passengers now able to use them and some airports still sending you to line up in front of person as well as using the machines, I have found it faster to go straight to the manual checking line in the first place, if they don't have a line.
