Intl-Intl Connection in Atlanta - Picking up Luggage?

Hi,

I am a Canadian who is considering flying Toronto-Atlanta-Quito and I am wondering if I will need to pick up my luggage and check it in again in Atlanta.

I know Toronto has US Pre-Clearance, however, I have never gone through it before so I am unfamiliar with the process. Would a US transit be a huge hassle?

Should I leave a day earlier and pay extra to fly Toronto-Panama-Quito instead (my luggage would be checked to my final destination)?

If you go through pre-clearance, then you do American immigration and customs in Toronto. You will be coming into Atlanta as a domestic passenger and your luggage will be checked through to Quito. However, on your return trip, assuming it's the opposite, you will have to get your luggage in Atlanta.

Kat,

I did not see which airline you are flying, or if this would be on one single ticket, or separate tickets.

The answers might have some bearing on how the luggage will be handled.

Good luck,

Hunt

The airline would be Delta on a single ticket, one way.
