London to Auckland without long flights

We are planning a RTW flight, which to include the Cook Islands, seems to tie us to using a Star Alliance ticket. We are of an age when 13+ hours even in Business Class (as in, say, LHR-SIN) become gruelling. I’ve tried to work out if I can get from London to Auckland in a series of flights of not more than 8 hours with the option of a stopover after each. (Except for just under 10hours RAR-LAX I can manage the rest in ‘hops’!)

I can’t see a way to do it using SA, even changing in Istanbul still means 10+ hours on to SIN so this may be a futile search, but I wonder if anybody has any ideas that I have missed. Thanks

You don't have to stick with one alliance but it's much less straightforward.

You probably need a specialist full service TA for this kind of itinerary.

Thanks Douglas, I’m sure you are right. I have a TA lined up but i’m keen to give as clear direction as I can!

My thought for now is Emirates via DXB, SIN, SYD and AKL looks good, and then use AirNZ, UA and perhaps AC coming back. Not sure if two multi-stop one way tickets will be hugely dearer than a RTW ticket?

I find Trailfinders excellent for this kind of thing.

Trailfinders - that’s who I use - just didn’t want to lead the conversation..... but I suspect there is consensus here!

Thanks.

That could be a nice itinerary:

London - Dubai (7 hours)

Dubai - Singapore (7.5 hours)

Singapore - Sidney (7.5 hours)

Sidney - Christchurch (?) (3 hours)

Trailfinders but together my slightly eccentric RTW flights (London, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Fiji, Brisbane, Alice Springs, Uluru, Cairns for Port Douglas, Palau, Kosrae, Borneo, London) and gave very sound advice about which consortium to use for the most economic ticket.

Generally RTW tickets are a better deal than return tickets, but of course it depends on how far around the world you are going/

Thanks Dubai-Phil, will also factor in the leg to CHC (which annoyingly I have previously flown and forgot all about) - as I recall is it not (or at least it was) the continuation of the EK flight SIN-SYD?

As half of another couple of travelling old gits spending the kids' inheritance travelling in the front of the 'plane, we don't find the 13 hours to Singapore at all "gruelling". We always take an overnight flight. Routine is relax in the lounge before the flight, get on board and have a glass of bubbly while the self loading cargo fills the back. Take off, have another refreshing drink, dinner, take in a film or two then go to sleep to be woken by the stewardess offering breakfast a couple of hours out and before you know it, you are in Singapore at 17:00 local time and ready for a night on the town (to help the body clock adjust to local time you understand!)

Flying back from the States on those (relatively) short haul flights (only 9 hours!) you really don't have long enough in the air to get a proper night's sleep.

Thanks quakered, in principle I agree completely, but after a recent sleepless PER to DXB overnight flight I am working to very simple and clear instructions from my companion!

My wife used to tell me she could not sleep on a 'plane even in a lie flat so I videos her on a smartphone complete with snoring sound track. she then said the the sleep quality was not the same as a proper bed - doh! No complaints since we started using First though!
