Duty free alcohol

Duty free alcohol

We are flying fromToronto to Copenhagen and then after a 2 hour layover, carrying on to Bergen Norway. We want to buy some duty free alcohol. Can we do this in Toronto and carry it on board and continue with the same carry on duty free on board our flight to Bergen or will it be confiscated in Copenhagen?

Is another option to wait until Copenhagen and purchase it there and carry it on the plane to Bergen? Would we be in a location where this purchase is possible in Copenhagen airport? Would Scandinavian Airlines allow us to bring duty free on to their plane to Bergen?

You just need to ask the sales clerk in Toronto to put the bottle in a tamper-proof bag. Then you will be able to take it on your connecting flight.

You could also buy at CPH during your time there (https://shop.cph.dk/en-gb) and also upon arrival at BGO (http://www.tax-free.no/5143/).

Do take note of Norway's duty free allowance (http://www.toll.no/en/goods/alcohol-and-tobacco/quotas/).

"Would Scandinavian Airlines allow us to bring duty free on to their plane to Bergen?"

Are there airlines that inspect passengers' baggage themselves to determine whether they are bringing their own alcohol/food/drinks??! If there is an issue it is surely not with the airline but with security, which in all cases has no problem with liquids purchased from airside shops at the airport in question.

The rules for security checks are on https://www.cph.dk/en/practical/Baggage/liquid-rules/ - I have to say that while there would be no problem for items purchased at another EU airport, I have read of problems where items were purchased at other airports, possibly because of differing interpretations of "tamper-proof".

Thank you. Your information has been very helpful. In checking out the web site for duty free in Norway, the amounts allowed seem to be very high...for example they allow a litre of alcohol plus 6 bottles of wine plus some beer. Did I read this correctly?

No. 1 litre of spirits, 1.5 litres of wine and 2 litres of beer is the basic quota. If not taking tobacco you get an adittional 1.5 litres of wine.

So you can bring 4.5 litres (6 bottles) of wine if not bringing spirits or tobacco plus 2 litres of beer - spirits can be substituted with wine at 1:1.5 and wine can be substituted with beer at 1:1 - you can't substitute up in abv.

So you have two issues here. One, how much liquor you can bring into Noway duty free (post #6). That's a matter based on Norway's custom laws.

The second question, which you posted in your OP, is whether you can carry liquor in excess of security limits when you take them through a connection at Copenhagen. I have no experience with the Copenhagen airport, but there are other airports in the world where you have to go through security on transit. Sometimes there are secondary security checks at the boarding gate. I have personally experienced these security checks, and have heard stories about passengers trying to take duty free liquor pass these secutiry check points. I can tell you that there is no guarantee that you can take your duty free liquor through, even if they are in temper proof bags.

So I would say that unless you are certain that you can take your liquor through Copenhagen airport security, I would not take that chance.

Just my own experience/opinion, but duty free booze is seldom worth the time, effort, and hassle unless you live in a country that taxes it at 1000% or so.

Warren - Which is the case for Norway. Where the cheapest bottle (70cl) of vodka is 260 NOK (€27.50/£24/US$31).
