A short taxi ride took us to this lovely Greek taverna in the village of Armeni, which was recommended by locals as being one of their favourite places to dine. No menu - they just bring out what’s cooking (similar to meze/tapas style of dining)....Ours included stuffed courgette flowers, ox tail, pork steak, Greek salad, sausage, yellow cheese, fried potatoes and chicken, finishing with ice cream accompanying halva and orange cake. Nicely washed down with house wine. All served by pleasant staff. Highly recommend.More

Read about this place on culture trip as being ones of Crete’s best tavernas. Glad we came! They had no menu and just brung out various dishes - they did check if we had any allergies and told us vaguely what the dishes were etc....It was a cool concept and kept us on our toes. For starters they brought courgette & tomato scrambled egg, stuffed pumpkin flower, Greek salad and snails. All were pretty good. For mains they brought out chicken, pork and bifteki. Meats were tender and flavourful and chicken and pork dishes came with tasty sauce. I was so happy they brought out bifteki, as I had completely forgotten about this dish and was pleasantly surprised when it came out, plus it was delicious, especially with lemon squeezed over it. The dessert was rice cake, orange cake and local sheep’s ice cream - was perfect way to end dinner. All this for €35 total for the two of us - great value! Highly recommend!More

We were on our way for the beach when we saw this little taverna next to the road. We stopped there for lunch and it was really delicious. The concept is that there isn’t any menu but the waitress brings you some traditional dishes. We...had some cheese and bread as appetizer, then stuffed zucchini flowers with another dish with eggs and zucchini, and a salad. Then she brought us some beef and chicken with potatoes. To finish we had havla and an orange pie. Everything was really delicious ! And we paid 20€ for 2 people in the end, which is a really good price. I definitely recommend you this place if you want to discover some traditional greek food !More

This restaurant is simply amazing. There were 11 of us that turned up without a booking and the staff could not do enough for us. They quickly put together a table for all of us on the terrace and explained that it is a traditional...greek set menu. Thats when things got interesting. We have never seen so much food. Course after course there was something for everyone. the orange cake is to die for and we even went back a few days later just to purchase an orange cake. The staff we so friendly and accommodating. All this for just 18E a head. With the amount of amazing dishes we had it could have easily been 40E a head and we would have still paid as it was well worth it.More

The service was as expected for a crowded place. The environment pleasant. The concept was nice since you got to sample between several dishes. Some of them were good and a few not so good in terms of taste. Nothing spectacular. The price 20 per...person without drinks was much more than it should and what is worthy. I am a local so I can value the taste and compare the prices. For 14 Euros it would be a choice, now I won;t go there again. For the concept and local food 4 stars, but it could be lowerMore

Thank you to Safis and his wife for a wonderful Cretan food extravaganza. The food was delicious, slow cooked and served with love and hospitality. They have a must visit resturant when visiting Rethymno for home style food. After many years of travelling Greece it...is one of the stand out experiences. We enjoyed not having to decide what to eat as it was done for us.More

I went last year and the food was perfect. I decided to visit it again this year to see if it's still good. It was better! Better than perfect. The waitresses were friendly polite and helpful as it should. The prices are normal, the portions...were satisfying in size and the taste heavenly good. It is as the staff knows how much you want to eat and what. Lastly one more thing that I love in this place is that the cousin is almost exclusively cretan and mediterranean from the refreshments to deserts! It's the perfect place for a tourist to taste the local cousin. PERFECT!More

We arrived in Armeni for a visit, stopping here at Alekos initially for a "quick sandwich"! We had a wonderful experience of tasting all their local dishes of the day -- our very hospitable waitress told us: now here comes one more good thing! And...each course was delicious -- starting with the traditional Cretan salad, among our favorites was the lamb and tomato burger and their locally made cheese! All was delicious, and such warm hospitality! Thank you for welcoming us and providing a memorable experience for our Armeni arrival!More
