I stayed at the Mariposa B&B for two nights in September 2016 and ate breakfast and dinner at the Cafe. As a single woman travelling alone, I felt safe at all times. The room was comfortable and pleasant. The site is lovely, facing a garden full of hummingbirds that come and feed on the restaurant terrace. The food was good... More

It was Fathers day. I decided my two boys and son in law will do something different that day, and different it was. We called to book our spot, and right there we were welcomed by the beautiful voice of Marcia Guerrero. We got there on time with my seven grandchildren, welcomed by the beautiful smiling faces of two of the... We arrived a little early at the restaurant and was greeted by one of sisters, who also cook and prepare the food. We were invited to sit on the beautiful terrace until dinner was ready. Everything is prepared to be served right away, timed with your reservation. We spent a magical hour marveling at the display of hummingbirds coming to... More

We went as a family to celebrate my husbands birthday (my daughters are 3 and 5). We all had a wonderful time which was exemplified by the service provided by wonderful people on site like Marcia, her sisters and her nephew. We booked the Cocoa infused menu at the Cafe itself but also the fishing and local history tour (all... More

I went for dinner. Delicious local food, friendly owners. I loved the parang. The addition of cocoa to the food was interesting.

My husband and I were joined by his aunt and cousin for dinner at Cafe Mariposa. We expected a gourmet meal in a beautiful space and were not disappointed. What was unexpected was the beauty and serenity of the space, which was somehow intensified by the obvious delight of the feeding hummingbirds. Being at the family-owned restaurant felt like being... There is a reason this place has virtually all 5-star reviews. Cutting straight to the food - we ate as vegans (you call in advance and let them know when you are booking). There was a plate of fried plantains (I think) and they were battered really carefully, it wasn't bland at all but I can't describe how it was... More

Description
Cafe Mariposa is a family owned restaurant located in the picturesque Lopinot valley, nestled at the foothills of the Northern Range on the island of Trinidad.

We are located 30 minutes north of the Piarco International Airport and are a perfect option for persons needing to stay for a weekend before traveling on from Tobago to international locations, or overnight to catch early morning flights.

The property is designed so that even while in the shelter of the building, you may still have the feeling of being in the garden. Our B&B which has four en-suites overlooking our garden and amphitheater may sleep up to nine guests at a time.

With prior notice we cater to special diets such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten and lactose intolerant.

Our focus is to intentionally grow a farm to fork experience for our guests utilizing fresh herbs from our garden, local farmers and other organic growers outside of the valley. Free range eggs and chickens from neighboring farmers, fish reared in our mountain spring water.

Our specialty is cuisine innovation utilizing local roasted cacao beans infused in our beverages, savory and sweet creations. In the last four years the Cafe has won seven (7) awards from local cuisine challenges for best beverage, best savory and best dessert.

Each year, on the Saturday immediately following the famous Trinidad Carnival, Cafe Mariposa hosts our annual "Cocoa Tasting" event which gives patrons the ability to taste several of our cuisine creations. The event takes the form of a cocktail afternoon, generally starting at 3:00 p.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m.

In addition to tasting great food and beverages; guests have the opportunity to purchase chocolates, creams and other items made from local cacao beans and cocoa butter. These items are crafted by our local chocolate entrepreneurs from around the country.

The Cafe hires live musicians who entertain our guests while they enjoy the ambiance of our location and our great food. Guests witness the roasting of a whole suckling pig, marinaded in chocolate and cocoa, mixed with fresh herbs and spices.

During the year, the Cafe participates in events taking place in the village and guests may have the opportunity to witness the life of the villagers, monthly bread baking in the dirt oven at the Count de Lopinot listed, National Heritage site, traditional music, the various games, walks around the valley or if planned, guided hiking tours to Asa Wright Nature Center, trips to the Caroni Swamp to view the famous Scarlet Ibis.

The Lopinot valley has many birds and Cafe Mariposa has a porch at the rear of the property where many hummingbirds visit us daily. Trinidad has 18 species and during the year we may have visits from as many as 13 species visiting our garden.

Free wifi is available and the property is now credit card ready accepting Visa and Master Card. Airport transfers may be arranged and parking is available on the compound for overnight visitors.

Public transport is available right outside our door if guests wish to access the Priority Bus Route for travel around the country from the Port of Spain hub.

All visits to Cafe Mariposa, the Mariposa Gardens, or for hikes on the Nature Trail or overnight stays are strictly by reservation.
