We stopped at Restaurant Niinipu for lunch and we enjoyed every single dish. Vegetarian dishes are available. This is a perfect lunch option for those who cycle the Puumala Trail just like us.

The restaurant is situated in an old cattle house on the island of Niinisaari. You need to take a ferry (free of charge) to reach the destination. The surroundings of the restaurant represent a traditional Finnish countryside view with structures dating as far as the...18th century. You can opt to eat either inside or outside, depending on the weather. The restaurant itself is rather small. However, on Sundays there is a large lunch buffet for which the upstairs hall of the restaurant is opened. Whether you plan to visit on a Sunday or between Tuesday to Saturday (closed on Monday), making a reservation is highly recommended as the restaurant is very busy and popular. The food itself hosts a plethora of traditional local dishes ranging from different delicious fishes to an assortment of salads. The main course is usually a traditional Finnish dish such as the Karelian Stew. All ingredients are local. The dessert typically includes sweet quark with local berries as well as delicious buns baked by the hostess herself! Needless to say, all dishes taste delightful. The restaurant staff is extremely friendly and attentive, the latter of which is rather rare in Finland. I especially recommend visiting on a Sunday, as eating in the upstairs hall surrounded by antiquities from ages past is an experience in itself.More
During our bicycle trip we had our lunch in Niinipuu. Everything was fresh and tasty. The smoked rainbow trout - delicious - came directly from the smoker. We really recommend.
You can always be assured of a warm welcome here. Food is good and well priced and you'll never leave feeling empty. Good for families too as the kids can roam around. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
Freshly cooked local food. We were here off our boat for lunch which we ate in the garden. The salad was well presented in the attractive interior. Salad and soft drinks were included in the very reasonable price. I had perch, my wife meatballs. Highly...recommended simple well prepared food and good service.More
Food is great and good value for money. Local incredients are used with high skill. Friendly prices for kids too. The scenic road and ferry to get there is an experience as well. The traditional country house milieu is nicely kept.
The menu is not long, but everything is from fresh local ingredients. Definitely worth the short extra drive from the main road.
Thank you for visit! We use local ingredients as much as possible, so we focus on quality over quantity on our menu. Welcome again!
We stayed at Paulala's Log Cabin and had lunch at Niinipuu in early September. It was really interesting for the adults and fun for the kids, as Paula the owner spent some time showing us how she smoked salmon. It was the BEST smoked salmon...we have ever had! Restaurant was cozy and food was downright authentic and fresh!More
We went for a lunch to restaurant Niinipuu while having a boat trip at Lake Saimaa. What a nice surprice: Good, local, self-made food and excellent service. Reasonable prizes. Check it out!
Had a nice lunch here, very pleasant atmosphere with local fresh food. Try the meatballs or salmon soup !
This is my favorite restaurant in Puumala. Only minus is that it closes already at 6 pm and is open only during the summer time.
Lake Saimaa is the biggest series of lakes within Finland, extending to several hundred kilometers in the eastern part of the country. If you are about to take the scenic road 62 from Imatra thru Puumala to Mikkeli, make sure you will deviate west on..."Luukkolantie" just 1 kilometer south from Puumala Bridge and drive until you reach the small road ferry of "Hätinvirta" on road "Lintusaarentie". This free ferry will cross you in just few minutes and drive another kilometer and turn right. There you will find summer restaurant Niinipuu, which is built into old farm house. Another way to arrive is by boat, you will find a place to leave your boat and take the 200meter walk to the restaurant. With nice summer day there is some outdoor seating as well. The garden around the restaurant is nice and there is place for children to play. Also your dogs are welcome. This family own and operated restaurant will serve you typical finnish food, with specialities on local fish. Smoked salmon will be smoked only after your order on the back yard. Fried Whitefish ("muikku") is subjectively the best fish in the (my) world. Also the fish soup from local salmon is fresh and tasty. The meat selection might be wider for meatlovers. Salads are fresh. Desserts are made from typical finnish from local ingredients. Check the opening hours from the web or call as they will close early. Sunday early brunch.More
