They have such a great and large terrace and especially during warm weather it's the best area to enjoy dinner. Pizzas were good and good selection of drinks. However service wasn't the best you could imagine but still ok, nothing special. We had to wait...quite a long time but still would recommend and come back.More
I have to give this pub/restaurant excellent review because of it's very unique atmosphere. In the middle of nowhere this place really is something very Finnish. I've eaten only pizza, and it has been good and tasty. Not traditional italian, but something Finnish people seem...to like. Lot of toppings. There used to be even more but thank god they have diminished the amount :) There are locals, people from summer cottages, people coming by boat. Really a place to see if you are nearby. Atmosphere is friendly, the place is a little bit shabby, but that's just a part of the charm of this place.
If you want to see a part of Finland you never see elsewhere, go to this place. It's almost something like in Kaurismäki films :)More
Vonkamies (Finnish for 'river man' or 'log floater') is a summer pub restaurant, combined with a little store selling groceries and small supplies for homes and travelers. It is located near the small but beautiful Pihlajakoski marina on lake Päijänne, and it is only open...during the summer season. The place looks a bit rough, not exactly refined, but the atmosphere is unique.
At Vonkamies they have a compact list of pub food typical for Finnish pubs: schnitzels and stuff, but I've actually only tried their Finnish style pizzas, with loads of toppings. They are actually very tasty and affordable! You can sit in the nice beer garden even if it is raining; there is a plexiglass roof to keep you dry.
During summer there's always people coming and going; local farmers, summer cottagers and boaters sitting down for a cold beer. People come here dressed _extremely_ casually, often with their dogs, who are welcomed warmly and provided with nice bowls of water. In the evenings there is often karaoke, and on saturdays there's live music. The staff is super friendly. This is the only restaurant on a 25 kilometer radius, so you really meet all different kinds of people here!More
