About
At the heart of the Waterford Greenway and Co.Waterford's primary village lies our treat for your soul "Coach House Coffee". Situated at the historic Famine Workhouse development in Kilmacthomas, Co.Waterford. The village of Kilmacthomas lies at the midway point of the Waterford Greenway, on the banks of the river Mahon in the aptly titled Mahon Valley. In the early 1870's the influence of the industrial revolution reached Kilmacthomas when the Waterford to Mallow railroad came to town. During this time the jewel in Kilmacthomas' crown was constructed by way of an eight-arch curved stone viaduct spanning the Mahon River. These industrial influences inspired our unique cafe design. Although the last passenger services ceased in the late 1960's the railway continued to operate with the haulage of oil and magnesite for another couple of decades and fell into disrepair... until today! Following heavy investment, a 46km section of this railway is now public Greenway route, dissecting Co.Waterford to illustrate it's inner beauty. Cyclist and walkers can take in the beauty of Waterford from its lush green landscapes, Comeragh Mountains, breathtaking Coastline, historical architectural feats of bridges and tunnels. It's heart lies in Kilmacthomas at the 23km centre point. At the Workhouse park up in the public car-park and join the Greenway line, heading east towards Waterford city or west towards the majestic Coastline of Clonea, into Dungarvan town. At Coach House Coffee we only use hand roasted coffee and expertly selected tea leaves, we have an obsession with quality. We source our grade 1 Arabica beans under Coffee with a Conscience which forms part of our suppliers Corporate Social Responsibility Programme. Our roasted coffee is delivered to our door each week, meaning our coffee is not sitting for weeks or even months in dry packaging, ensuring the freshest possible cup every time you visit the Coach House. The blackboard displayed beside our kiosk displays the farm and location the beans were sourced, date of roasting and roaster... Just check it out! Our commitment to ethical trade ensures that we only buy coffee from recognised ethical suppliers that only source from sustainable farms and co-operatives.

Definitely recommend this cafe. Decor very cozy and modern with vintage twist. Very good customer service. Amazing food. Ordered the chicken curry and my boyfriend ordered the chicken burger. My curry was delicious, mildly spicy with with sweet potato which added lovely texture to the curry and perfectly cooked rice. My boyfriends burger tasted just like our home made burgers, fresh tomato, crispy lettuce, just the right amount of sauce, lovely chips and a really big crispy chicken fillet in a very soft brioche bun. We were both really happy with our coffees. The Coach house coffee has a very skilled barista that understands the art of coffee making. Place is spotless and the music playlist fits perfectly. Everything is very well priced. Our meals cost 12,95 each which we thought was cheap for the portion size and the fresh ingredients used. Same goes for our beverages, big cups of coffee for 3,00/3,40 euro is very reasonable, we have paid more for less coffee in the past. We finished off with a nice slice of blueberry cheesecake which was the best we’ve had in a long time, creamy, fluffy, very well balanced (only critique: could have a little bit more biscuit but amazing nonetheless). We enjoyed our stay and really recommend Coach House Coffee.

The Waterford Greenway must be one of the most successful tourism initiatives in Ireland. A dedicated bicycle and walkway running about 50km from the city of Waterford to the seaside town of Dungarvan. Roughly midway in the journey is Kilmacthomas and adjacent to, and directly accessible from, the Greenway is the Coach House Coffee house. Located on the campus of the old Flahavans porridge factory it's sited in, as the name suggests, an old coach house. It's a large space with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate the hordes of hungry and thirsty cyclists. We've been there a few times for coffee or breakfast and, on our recent post-lockdown foray, we rocked up by car to the large and surprisingly busy car park. There have been some adjustments to the operation, contact tracing details, sanitisers etc but nothing intrusive or off putting. The food, you say? We shared a pretty amazing breakfast blaa- basically the full Irish in a soft bun. (The blaa is a Waterford speciality bread roll). Two very excellent flat whites were consumed at an outdoor table in seasonal sunshine while we watched the hordes of MAMILs come and go. An excellent stopover on your Greenway journey which you cannot and should not miss.

I was here last Sunday on my own for a coffee and cake. The staff was friendly, although i had to wait a while and asked could my order be taken while a family next to me literally sat down and got their orders. I had a chocolate brownie which was not so nice (it was a bit dry and tasted slightly bitter), but I have had really good chocolate cakes here. The issue I had most was that on my bill I was charged 60cent for oat milk. I had an americano with a dash of it, not even an oat latte r so. In the menu it said that plant milks are 50cent. When I paid and questioned the charge, the staff was not interested and said "afraid so". I emailed the owner and he said they would not charge for some oat milk on the side (but you did) and he would give me the 60cent back next time. I have a massive gripe with charging for plant milks. They are more emission friendly, animal welfare considered and a lot of people have dairy intolerances. I work as a barista and we do not charge for plant milk. The standard answer is that cow's milk is cheaper (true, but there are good alternatives in Lidl and Aldi) but I think we should question the surcharge. It is just a money making tool for me.

Visited while we were in the area based on good reviews. Chaos would be an understatement. As customers who had never visited, we were totally confused. There’s no signage etc anywhere. We first queued at the takeaway side of things, under the assumption that’s all that was available. Staff there were talking to one another and didn’t even acknowledge us standing there. No social distancing whatsoever inside the tiny space and no signage to explain entrance, exit etc. It was a free for all. We then found the larger sit down seating. Took a table outside, which was our first mistake. The place is alive with wasps. Seems there’s a clear problem they they need to deal with. Staff eventually came to take our order. When we asked what cakes were on offer, his response was “I haven’t got a sweet tooth, so I don’t know”. Surely all staff should have knowledge of the menu?! He said he would send another staff member out with a cake list, which never happened. Our food arrived before the coffees. Had to ask two or three times for the coffees, which eventually arrived barely warm, after clearly sitting inside for ages after being made. By far the worst coffee we have ever had, even garage coffee would be better. Whilst the food itself was good, all of the other issues made this a horrible experience. Would never return.

We visited today and I was disappointed. I ordered soup of the day along with skinny fries and a kids meal. The soup came minus a spoon which I had to ask for and the fries were literally not skinny...they were normal sized chips from a processor i.e. same as I can buy in my local supermarket. The kids meal was as all kids meals. Maybe the deserts/cakes are good but I really wouldn't bother with lunch. It wasn't cheap either but then they have a captive audience.

Lovely building and a great place for outdoor dining. Location excellent. We had a cappuccino and a latte. Both were fine. I have a few questions below for management so please respond when you review this. Please note there is a difference in prices as your online menu says it should be €6 for these 2 drinks but I was charged €6.60. So that needs to be rectified. Why is there no price list at all for the lovely range of cakes and desserts you have on display? Are you not legally required to have a price list on display? I will give this place another try and would cautiously recommend it. Just get your prices right and put up a cake price list too.

Hi, Thanks for your query. Our Lattes and Cappuccinos are priced at €3.30. All our coffee prices are displayed on the black boards above the Coffee machines. We no longer have shared drinks menus on tables in light of Covid-19 and our food menus are single use printed sheets. Our cakes are always €4.95 and the options vary daily. Loaf slices and smaller pieces are €2.95. Thanks for your feedback.

Booked by phone, 5 adults, including one vegan, latest arrival time possible, 4.30.p.m. We were on time. Seated, handed menus. I asked about vegan options, for our guest, waitress replied, there are loads on there. First red flag. Only the Dahl was vegan, the rest vegetarian. Another waitress approached asking about drinks? I asked for the cocktail menu. My son in law had enjoyed a cocktail, when last he visited from uk. Waitress answered,we don't do cocktails , I enquired about other drinks, she thought there was white wine, but had no idea of the name. An illuminated sign above the bar said cocktails! We ordered, one zero coke, 2 Pepsi, one latte, one tea. Cans were served with glasses filled with ice, no choice. My tea was weak, like dishwater.. husband's latte OK, but nothing marvellous. Our meal choices, one Dahl, plus side of chips the Dahl was a light bite. Two fish and chips, one burger and chips ,one portion of chips. Everything then was rushed, the food came out too quickly to have been just cooked, the Dahl was not particularly hot, fish and chips deemed OK, the burger definitely looked pre cooked, lettuce soggy , thrown together. My chips, served in a metal drinking mug. We weren't asked if we wanted any dessert, the staff were clearing up as we were eating. And the kick in the teeth, a bill for €85. All in all a pretty awful experience, and not something our guests from uk were impressed with. We have eaten there before, had chicken gougons which were very good, the current ,very much reduced menu, only offers cajun spiced ones, no good if you don't like spicy food. Overall, maybe the bikers and walkers fare better, it will be a long time before we go there again.

Organise whatever cycling you want to do so that you end up at the Coach House for food. We did and loved it. Fantastic spot - lots of inventive, well presented food all served by a very friendly, professional young team. When I complemented them I couldn't believe that they had only started table service the previous day AND were working with a new menu. Absolutely a destination, worth a detour, spot

Despite the pleasant staff and gorgeous setting, the food felt like a massive let-down. The menu is limited and the quality of the food doesn’t match the expensive prices. The burger I ordered was burnt and didn’t taste great at all. Lovely place with fantastic service, just disappointed with the food!

Ive been to this restaurant a few times as the food is lovely and the area is pleasant with easy access to the greenway, each time iv went in I was hoping the service would improve but honestly it is shocking. The staff are friendly and polite and there is plenty of them but for some reason they are all just pottering around or chatting away while not one or two but several customers are waiting or trying to get their attention. After today I give up, we waited about 20 mins to order after being brought to our seats only I had to grab a waiter and ask him to please take the order then over an hour for food. I could forgive a once off but this has happened each time and it's just so disappointing. I watched on as other customers waited and waited and looked around trying to get the attention of staff as well. Honestly guys you need to have a chat with your staff maybe it's poor management I don't know but it really let's the place down.

Great starting or finishing point for the Greenway. Excellent menu, thoroughly backed up by quality, flavour and freshness. The staff are so friendly, helpful and genuine. Really provide a warm welcome and such an efficient service in a very busy environment that makes the experience all the more enjoyable and comfortable in these different dining times. The premises, tables, chairs and toilet facilities are all spotless and there are plenty of sanitizing stations spread throughout the premises too.

Coach house used to be fab. But Over the last few months the food had gone significantly downhill whilst the prices have significantly increased. You now pay Dublin prices for very poor quality food. My mother got the mushroom bruschetta today and she was gagging. It’s a lovely location and a very cool restaurant but it’s not worth visiting anymore. Service is also extremely slow.

The food here is excellent, they do specials all the time and they are really interesting, they do all of their baking in-house and it’s truly delicious. I had the tiramisu yesterday and it was really the best I’ve ever had. It’s situated on the Waterford greenway so it’s a great spot to take a break,or,if you’re like me,you love the place so much, you drive there every weekend. I do however do the 2 km walk to and from Kilmackthomas on the greenway. The staff here couldn’t be nicer,it’s set in a Workhouse that is beautifully preserved, there is a sign there with all of the history ,it’s lovely seeing it being used now for families and friends getting together enjoying great food and a good time. I also see that they do a takeaway menu but I’ve always eaten there so I don’t know the extent of that menu, their coffee is really good too. In the summer we bring our little dog,we can sit “outside” with her,it’s enclosed on 3 sides, and if it’s cold they are really good about putting on the outdoor heaters for you. I highly recommend this little gem of a place ,it never disappoints. Watch out though, if you try it once, you’ll be addicted like me.

We paid 14.70 e each for a tea and a so called toasted sandwich . Ny sandwiche was cold and was uncooked in the middle, made with cheap bread , so shocked at the price, on top of which someone was sanding down and hoovering the restaurant counter, a maintenance job that should not be done while people are eating . Young staff who served were very nice though.
