I just want to start by saying I have never written a poor review yet on TripAdvisor. I was returning home from a weekend away with my husband and two children when we stopped at Kilkea castle club house for lunch. Pros: lovely view of...the castle. Cons: We were shown to a table and our order was taken shortly after but we were waiting for one hour for the food to arrive!! I asked was the kitchen under staffed. We were told that the chicken dish my husband had ordered was taking time to cook. This was ridiculous as the breast of chicken was actually small. I dread to think how long it might have taken if he had ordered steak. Eventually, my husband and I received our food first then 5 minutes later our children got theirs. As we were waiting so long we had plenty of time to observe the other tables around us. They all received their food piece meal. No table had everyone served at the same time. And if anyone should have been served first it should have been the children especially when they were already waiting one hour (it also contradicted the excuse that it was my husband's dish holding things up). The other tables also seemed to be waiting a long time so it wasn't just us. While we were waiting I discovered that we had also been given (by the manager) a slightly different menu. It didn't have the fish and chips option on it but two other more expensive options. Strange?! When we arrived three different staff asked us if we had booked. We had phoned on route and they told us there was no need to book. Also, while they were asking us this there was lots and lots of empty tables visible so it seemed like a funny question given their availability. Overall, the place is obviously very poorly managed. On the Sunday of this long bank holiday weekend it seemed usual for such a beautiful place to be so quiet and half empty. I now know why. It should be packed with locals...of course they know better! I regret having stopped there and would not recommend it to anyone.More
