What an improvement since we visited a couple of years ago - todays visit was a real pleasure. There had been problems/ Maintenance in the kitchen this morning so service was starting later than expected, however we were welcomed in to sit and relax until our order was taken. We sat in the clean and comfortable bar area and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with pleasant chat between staff and customers alike. Gay greeted us warmly and was very patient and empathetic when answering our questions, and was interested enough to ask where we were from , and listened attentively to our response. Despite the bar and restaurant now being full , service was faster than we expected, and the food was served with a smile . We were both very happy with our meals ( steak and ale pie , and grilled chicken ) which were well cooked , well presented , served hot , and were very tasty. On arrival I had informed them we had a Chef and Brewer code for a lunch main meal and drink for £10 ( sadly just for one person ) but I also had some Tesco vouchers too . These two offers could not be used together so they divided the bill so we could use each individually…… However my phone with the codes on then froze and for a good five minutes staff and customers alike tried to help me out … and to my relief they were successful! I was extremely embarrassed about this , but Gay put me at ease . We will return again soon as have more Tesco vouchers to use up !

Last stay was before the pandemic. Had a room in the main part of the hotel. Room was lovely, comfortable and spacious, with nice amenities. Toilet seat though was broken and holes in the bathroom wall had been filled but not repainted. Breakfast was amazing outside in the sunshine. Had evening dinner which was a bit of a letdown. Lamb rump was dry with only four small slices of lamb, and not served very hot. Fish and chips not good. Dinner overall not good value. Ordered the Malbec from the wine list and was served a different and obviously cheaper bottle than the one the list. Not offered the opportunity to try it first and the bottle had already been opened before bringing to the table. Sauvignon Blanc was also a cheap bottle at an expensive price. Beer in the bar though was really excellent. Overall, a nice stay spoiled by dinner. Will definitely stay again but eat dinner elsewhere.

Four of us visited The Kings Head for lunch on March 6th. We had not been there before and after deciding we liked the look of the lunch menu we ventured inside. We found a nice table and were given a very nice welcome by Chris who was working the bar. An excellent pint of local brew Black Sheep, possibly the best pint of it I've had. The others in the party were served a pot of tea which they happily brought to the table. The food orders were taken by Gaye who was friendly and chatty and made us feel very welcome. The meals were excellent, fresh and substantial. Upon hearing it was my birthday I was congratulated by Gaye. When it came to coffee/dessert time Gaye actually arrived with a lemon muffin complete with candle and sang Happy Birthday to me. That was a lovely touch and it was sincere. After the lunch we were free to chat as long as we wished in a very pleasant atmosphere, and Gaye and Chris were happy to chat too. A lovely experience all round, and we all really appreciated the efforts they made to give us a nice experience. Would definitely recommend it for lunch. The prices were reasonable, the menu was good, and the food very nice indeed.

Very nice place - traditional, comfortable interior with a well stocked bar although the beer choice was not great for my taste. We booked a table for the evening and the booking was so disorganised - the chap had to break in to a drawer to find a pen then scribbled it on the back of a scrap of paper that had something on other side. When we turned up at 7.30, I was surprised to find they did have a record of booking but it was down as 5.30 - that said, they were very happy to find us a table and there was no hassle. The food was quite good - pub fare, no complaints about that. But one of the waitresses seemed crazy and she was quite inappropriate / overly familiar with us - thankfully, we are quite broad minded, but we were left wondering how she could be let loose on guests, some of whom may be out for a quiet meal or for a treat. I would eat here again as I liked the place itself - it is very traditional and cosy - and I am not easily offended (thankfully), but I'd rather be served by the other lady who was friendly and helpful.

This is a very pleasant hotel to stay at for a few days break The location is beautiful and tranquil in a very typical Yorkshire stone market square. It is an authentic period hotel with a very pleasant ambience. All staff members work extremely hard and have excellent customer service skills. Special mention has to be made of the hotel breakfast which is a real classic full English experience and the service by the exceptional couple Gay and Chris makes the stay worthwhile. However a few facts do let the hotel down. Inexplicably the Hotel has become card only for all transactions. Every bar transaction has to be supported by a card payment which although is now the norm( I work in the hospitality industry and see it as now the main payment method) it should not be the only acceptable payment means and clearly was an area that several guests were not comfortable with. Also I think that their pricing, particularly for spirits, with a double gin at £8.10 plus £2 for tonic is significantly more than I would expect as the norm in a small Yorkshire bar such as this. The food offering is well cooked and presented and priced reasonably. We however booked for an evening meal on the Monday and were told that, of the 19 items of main meals, 9 were not available and that of the three daily specials only two were available. One of the reasons given was that they had no bread available for the burger based items. We chose our food and took advantage of the two course fixed price as a shown on the menu( after checking with the waitress that it applied) upon being presented with the bill the discounted prices were not offered and this had to be corrected. The hotel has a very accommodating policy for guests to bring dogs which is very good to see and does make for a pleasant change in todays sanitised society. Our room was well appointed with all the usual expected amenities and also had an iron. Ironing board and fan which was good. Bed was comfortable albeit a bit on the small side. Again a few areas did let things down. The inside lock mechanism was hanging off and the main light just flickered continuously. I was surprised that the cleaning staff did not bother to vacuum the floor when servicing the room as a broken biscuit was on the floor from the first day until we left after three nights. Please don’t think that we had a bad experience here. It is a very pleasant hotel but I just feel that it could do with a bit more effort to improve the small, but annoying, little things that make a good stay into an unforgettable one.

Dreadful! We got the impression they were short staffed, the kitchen was closing early, but the staff that were working were disinterested to the point of rudeness. The starter came with accompanying dips so small they were barely visible on the plate. One of our mains (sausage and mash) was clearly reheated and the other (shepherds pie) was one of the worst things I've ever eaten - fatty and greasy with a tiny amount of cold, tough, green veg. They brought us the desert menu & never came back. After 20 mins we flagged down the waitress who rolled her eyes at us. She didn't know what ice cream flavours they had. We gave up at this point, and after waiting 10 mins for the bill went and found someone to pay. I can't imagine we'll ever go back.

We live about 10 miles from here and were looking for somewhere for lunch. We have been here before. It is part of a chain (Chef and Brewer) and we usually avoid chain pubs but this place has a nice atmosphere and a lovely open fire. My husband had a pint of Theakstons and said it was a really good pint. I had the non alcoholic mulled wine. We asked for the menus but were initially told that it was only for people who had booked. However, the lovely waitress returned about ten minutes later with a couple of menus. My husband had the chicken and bacon sandwich with chips. I had the butternut squash soup which came with toasted bread floating on the top and two very small slices of bread. Both were very nice but what makes this place is the waitress. She is really lovely and friendly and engaging with the customers. She spoke to everyone and had a proper conversation. Thank you.

We are regular visitors to the Kings Head in Masham and have yet again had a wonderful two night stay there. I visited with my husband and our dog Teddy, and we were all given a very warm welcome on arrival. Our room in the courtyard was perfect, and included everything you need for a short stay including breakfast which was delicious! We also booked in for an evening meal on both nights. The food is of good quality and at a very reasonable price with lots of choice on the menu. All the staff at the Kings Head are very friendly and helpful and cannot do enough for you especially Gaye and Chris who will brighten up anyones day with their friendly and happy personalities. Thank you for making our stay very enjoyable and we look forward to returning very soon.

A welcome beyond compare, even though we only called in for coffee. It was so cosy and friendly we had lunch too, which was very good. Made to feel very at home and there was a blazing fire to keep us warm. Dogs also made very welcome (with a cooked sausage). Our server pointed out we could go for smaller (and cheaper) portions on the kids' menu if we wanted. Genuinely helpful, not money grabbing. And Old Peculier on the wood available. We will be back...

Came here for an early evening meal before a music performance at Masham Town Hall. Food is OK, standard Chef & Brewer and didn't blow me away. Had the sea bass, good generous portion, and tasty. Starter squid could have been aliitle more imaginative and hate garlic mayonnaise served with deep fried items. Too greasy! Something lighter would have made the dish much more palatable. Of particular mention was the service a lovely, helpful friendly lady called Gaye. I wish there were more waiting staff like her! She is a credit to the Kings Head. Thank you Gaye 😊 The thing which really let us down was the Lifestyle e-gift vouchers that were given as presents could not be used, despite showing the email sent to me with a voucher code on it. It was a very busy Friday evening for the bar staff and I didn't want to hold other customers up. I do feel that paying for your meal should be in a more private area (we were in the restaurant and Gaye was unable to activate the voucher on her device, and sent me through to the bar). I didn't like having to try and sort out a voucher with people looking over my shoulder and at a very busy bar so consequently I left it.

Five of us visited today, a table was adjusted to accommodate us without hesitation. We all ate from the lunch menu, 2x delicious toasted cheese sandwiches with fries and salad, 1 rump steak sandwich with salad and fries cooked medium rare as requested then 2x chicken and bacon sandwiches again with salad and fries (huge!). Portions were very generous, the food was hot and tasty. Gaye the waitress was a delight, helpful and charming. A great spot for a very reasonably priced lunch.

Dropped in with a friend and dog looking for lunch. Great welcome and served promptly by Chris & Gaye - my friend’s dog was also spoiled with doggie treats by Gaye. Our hot food order was duly served in a reasonable time and my Steak and Ale pie looked and smelt gorgeous, served with chips, peas, carrots, broccoli and it’s own little jug of extra gravy. Sadly, whilst the pie tasted lovely, the meat inside was a real let down, very limited in quantity and quality. Lovely pastry and gravy but definitely short changed on the beef front - would have been great if I’d ordered a Vegetarian option!

We enjoyed a one night stay, the restaurant was lovely ambience, the waitress was lovely, so kind and helpful and the food was delicious The room was comfortable with fresh milk available for hot drinks. The room was well decorated and very clean The breakfast was delicious with lots of choice and we were served by Gaye and Chris who we would like to give a special mention to, nothing was too much trouble. My mum cannot drink ground coffee and Gaye made her an instant coffee. They were both very friendly and helpful and the service was excellent. Chris even made the toast for my elderly mum even though it could be self serve. We would love to stay again - Thank you

Nice friendly welcome and service but the good stuff stops there! It’s not often we treat ourselves to a Sunday lunch out but as we were visiting the area we thought we would but wish we hadn’t. A turkey roast and a pork loin roast with crackling and a side of cauliflower cheese ordered from a tasty sounding menu. My Turkey roast turned up with 2 and a half very small roast potatoes and straight away I ordered more which promptly arrived. I’d question the ‘roast’ Turkey, the texture was more of an ultra processed taste, watery and highly salted. Perfectly cut slices makes me think it came out of a packet. Honey roasted parsnips and carrots but the carrots tasted of being boiled and slightly over done. The cauliflower was boiled too much and literally had melted cheese over it. My partner’s pork loin was missing the crackling which we queried but an apology was given by the chef. If only we had been told that as my partner would’ve ordered something else. Although the Kings Head scores highly, based on our visit we would strongly disagree and certainly won’t be rushing back to give our hard earned money to Chef & Brewer.

Lovely English breakfast particularly the Vegetarian breakfast. Gayle, Chris & Jo were very friendly making sure we had everything we needed. Also, very dog friendly & made sure we had a table that was good for our dog who is a little anxious. Even reserving the same table for us in the evening. In the evening it was very busy and food was delayed but the staff were still very friendly and tried to make the wait as short as possible. This is a really lovely pub, highly recommend.
