A good place to chill in Kotte - Boardwalk and Bavarian Garden at the Edge of Diyawanna Lake

I went there yesterday noon while checking out Diyatha Uyana after a very long time, but the place seemed to be closed for some reason. This review is based on my past experience as I used to go there back in the days quite frequently. In Tripadvisor at the time of writing this review, Diyatha Uyana has a rating of 4.5/5 based on 128 reviews, while Broadwalk has only 23 total reviews, with a rating of 3.5/5. I wonder why no one seems to have reviewed Broadwalk that much compared to Diyatha Uyana. It looks like those who visit Broadwalk isn't much into reviewing, but 23 reviews in total is a rather low number. This doesn't resonate with my experience. Out of the two, Diyatha Uyana & Broadwalk, the latter is the better one for me. But on closer look, it looks like there are multiple listings of Broadwalk (a second listing with a total of 5 reviews and a rating of 3.5/5) on Tripadvisor and also being part of both Diyatha Uyana and Waters Edge, Broadwalk is reviewed under these two locations too. While being managed by Waters Edge it is physically located within Diyatha Uyana premises. I have never gone to Broadwalk during day time but its a popular place for dinner and night time activities. Usually to Diyatha Uyana too, the crowds start coming in, towards the evening, after office hours and on holidays. Despite ample parking inside Diyatha Uyana, it is not unusual to find a long queue of vehicles waiting to enter the park, during the evening hours, especially during the holidays. Not sure if it is still popular to the same extent. They have fixed automated gates at the entrance now and parking which used to be free is now charged Rs. 50/= per hour - lower than the usual Rs. 70/= hour in most places. So anyone visiting Broadwalk must endure these inconveniences whenever they are present, unless you park your vehicles outside along the side of the road or visting Broadwalk while staying at Waters Edge. It used to be simply Boardwalk but now the open air garden surrounding the restaurant, where seats and tables made of concrete blocks are placed for the vistors to sit and dine, has been named Bavarian Garden at the Edge, with a German theme going on, promoting bockwurst and beer. Being close to home this used to be my go to place to chill, in the evening. While having a beer if the mood is right. I would mostly go alone or take family and friends occasionally. Those days they had a good overall menu [Can't remember Kottu being on it though ;-)], with a decent choice. Asian items like Fried Rice, and European fast food items like Fish and Chips, Salads for the health conscious, are some I can remeber. And separate dishes like devilled chicken or potato wedges to go with your drinks. There used to be a separate Kids Menu with Burgers and Chips and similar items. And a decent cocktail menu too, offering cocktails ranging from Margaritas to Dry Martinis. Nothing gourmet but generally decent. Service too was good except for the occasional guy with some attitude. But things could get busy as the night grows and at times overwhelming the staff. My visits were so frequent I had one guy who had befriended me and provided a good service whenever I went there. Unfortunately never got his name. Main restaurant is opened to the garden surrounding it, and back in the days they had a decent band playing there at the restaurant. Think they played both Sinhala and English songs. There's also an upstairs that I have never set foot in myself. Despite being next to the hotel Waters Edge, and being part of it, Baordwalk remains largely an attraction to the local visitors. They too are mostly independent patrons of Broadwalk, not the visitors of Waters Edge. It isn't the most touristy or the cosmopolitan place like some upmarket restaurants and pubs within the city of Colombo. Boardwalk and Bavarian Garden at the Edge of Diyawanna Lake I'd say is a good, fairly decent, and safe place to visit, particularly in Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte area. Especially if you are an outdoorsy type of a person. Family and kids friendly. Equally popular among couples, and guys as a good watering hole. Basically good place to chill with the restaurant merging with the surrounding landscape providing a relaxed ambience to the patrons.

Our sought after place for impromptu gatherings

I have been there several times. Each visit was to meet friends and enjoy some good food and drinks. Its ambiance is very good for casual meetings and get togethers. They did not even charge us a corkage fee. The staff is quite friendly and accommodating, Its upper floor is good for small parties and the lawn is good for a quiet drink with a friend or two.

"Not worth the price! The food here is extremely overpriced for what you get. The quality does not match the high prices at all. I ordered a milkshake, and it was nothing like a real milkshake—more like flavored water. Very disappointing. Definitely not recommending this place to anyone!"

I had been with other friends to lunch to Boardwalk. It was a refreshing experience with the waterviews and some good dishes. In contrast, five friends at dinner tonight we were blasted with a terrible atmosphere. A deafening live band drowned the place in mediocre singing, v. loud vocals and accompaying music. We came to dine and catch up, instead we had to sit with our ears plugged and conversations were possible only when the band took a break. We noticed a large table of aprox 18 guests, who were louder than the band, talking at a high decibel level, trying to sing, and screaming out lyrics, amidst loud hoots, further disrupted our evening The regular chef must have had the day off as the Prawn Pad Thai was mostly salt, no flavour, other dishes were tasteless. Apart from Thai, we had Cuttlefish, Chicken Schnitzels, Greek salad, Fish and chips. There was no salt and pepper on the table. The place seems to have changed to a loud venue for drinkers, sort of a rowdy dance hall. Sad and annoying.

Simply amazing I have been there a few times and the service levels have always been great Nice atmosphere and friendly staff, Dushan goes out of his way to make sure you are well looked after. Great food the grilled seer is a must try. A big thumbs up to Mr Sepa the manager and his team for the wonderful work done. Keep up the good work Cheers.

Devilled Chicken - A perfect dish to serve the evening drink with

It was once again time to celebrate small victories. Bought a Devilled Chicken to take away. Must say it's the best Devilled Chicken in town - whatever the sweet and sour sauce used makes it stand out from the run-of-the-mill devilled chicken you get in every nook and corner. A portion I was told consists of 180 grams of chicken. It along with some garlic bread and some nuts were our accompaniments for the drinks for the evening as well as the dinner. A perfect mouth watering dish to serve with drinks.

Great food, perfect setting

Fantastic location right by the lakeside. Fairly moderate menu choices, but still plenty for us to choose from. Excellent service from the waiting staff, who were efficient, friendly and chatty. Food and drinks were brought out promptly and tasted great. Lovely atmosphere, with live musicians playing, lots of other diners seated both inside and out by the lakeside and groups of friends and family taking walks by the lakeside and around the night market. Would highly recommend.

Nice, relaxing place for any occasion ...family or friends ... Food was nice and friendly hospitality. Although we didn't in this occasion, we were told we could take own liquor without charge. This is inside Diyatha Uyana. You can walk along the Diyawanna Oya after the heavy meals.. :) Good selection of cocktails and liquor too.

This restaurant is family friendly. Most days a live band plays. Atmosphere is nice. Food is ok. But the menu choices are limited. Service is good. If Water”s Edge which is just around the corner is above your budget because it is quite expensive, this would be a more affordable choice. View of the diyawanna oya, if your seated downstairs is very nice and a lovely place to be when the sun is setting.

An upmarket restaurant suitable for unusual occasions

At first, meals, drinks and service charges are expensive here and some meals are not worth for the price. This place situated in near the banks of Diyawanna river gives decent views by the night. Live music, Outdoor and indoor seating is available. A good location for a night outing.
