This is just an update that when we went to Bates we found out it was closed and still hadn't opened since it last shut. It doesn't say anywhere that it is closed so I'm not certain is it completely shut down or closed temporarily.

We’ve been here a few times and each time the food has been exceptional. Highly recommend a visit to this hidden gem. The Surf and Turf is delicious and the homemade bread is so fresh and tasty. Looking forward to another visit soon

The look of a lovely fire is welcoming but freezing cold room-took our jackets off and had to put them back on as so cold. Food v.poor- bland & not hot. We ate what we could of it and left to go have coffee &...dessert elsewhere as such poor selection. Not the standard of the Bates we knew and had dined there several times. Very dissapointed- waiter showed no sign of interest if we enjoyed it or not.More

Went here with two old school friends this evening, it used to be a nice place to go for good food.... not any more! The restaurant was freezing when we went in, but it is an old stone building. I ordered the pear and blue...cheese salad, which was very poor (pears had a metal taste and the blue cheese was just hard rind bits) . Two of us ordered the mushroom risotto.... when it arrived I was horrified - it looked awful, it was a big plate of brown sludge. When the waiter arrived and asked us he was disgusted with our response and walked away. (We told him it was tasteless and disappointing) . The waiter cleared our plates ( still full) and sent the waitress down with a desert menu, we told her that we wouldn't be having a desert and asked her for the bill. She went back to the service area and shouted " they don't want deserts or tea or coffee. Only the bill !" I certainly wouldn't recommend this very disappointing place to anyone. Its totally relying on the success of the past.More

We ate here on my wife’s birthday and were not impressed. The food was under seasoned, bland and unremarkable. Starters at €8-12 and mains at €28 you expect something special bit it did not arrive. We had chicken wings to start - tasty but meagre...and the pork cheek was tasteless - in a neutral watery sauce. The lamb was ordered as medium and came rare. Vegetables were extra and there was a choice of 7/8 overpriced wines. Not surprised there were only 6 tables occupied on a Friday night - the restaurant was cold when we arrived and the chef spent most of his time sitting with friends. Out of date and overpriced.More

Lovely restaurant in beautiful setting, the food is great. If you go early you get two courses for E 21. But the waiter is so rude, he can't smile or even speak to you. It feels an inconvenience to him that you have arrived. Such...a shame. Could have been so nice if the staff were friendly. Shame.More

Went to Bates for an anniversary dinner. Everything was absolutely delicious. We shared crab claws and chicken wings to start and both were amazing. For dinner I had a special which was tagliatelle with prawns and mussels in a delicious bisque sauce. It was sooo...good, should be added to the menu permanently in my opinion! My boyfriend had surf n turf which was also very good. We didnt have any room for dessert unfortunately. Would definitely recommend, everything was so good!More

Delicious food, warm welcome, gorgeous stone-walled interior - the poached pear starter is fab, as is the mushroom risotto.
