I happened on this pub at random when looking at the last minute for somewhere to go for a Valentines date. Not only did they have a table free (amazingly), but it was an incredibly sweet and cosy experience. Good food, a gorgeous atmosphere and charming service. Genuinely one of Hitchin's hidden gems. Great value, good ales and an open... More

Visited The Highlander for a Friday night dinner with friends - we all live in Hitchin but hadn't been for years. Booked a table early to avoid the 7.30 rush (which was a good tip) and really enjoyed an excellent meal. Lots of great choices on the menu and generous portions of delicious food. The crab starter was amazing, as... More

Hadn't been to this pub for years but was recommended by a friend. My wife and I went with friends for dinner and had a great evening. The menu was varied with some specials and the portions were plentiful. Recommend the duck confit and rib eye steak and a range of starters. Service attentive and atmosphere relaxed. This is a... We were six adults looking for somewhere nice for an 80th birthday lunch, and we found it at The Highlander. The chap I spoke to on the phone to make the booking was friendly and helpful. We felt welcome when we arrived. Our table was in a smaller side room (housing about six tables of various configurations) which felt cosy... More

This is a regular stop for lunch on a Saturday. There is always something on the menu to tempt however demanding the preceding week has been. The atmosphere is relaxed and the Patron and staff friendly and efficient. The food is always of a high standard and on this visit I had the duck rillette followed by the vegetarian risotto:... This is more an ongoing review than an individual one, as I have eaten here a few times over the last year or so. Food is always spot on (best steak and ale pie) and a nicely varied menu, service is attentive even when busy, and all very reasonably priced. One touch that always shows class, is cloth Napkins (paper... More

It's easy to forget to review your local favourites but it should be mandatory! Tonight was a fabulous meal, salmon and beetroot gravlax followed by a duck confit - both executed perfectly. This evening was also a jazz night, amazing musicians with accompanying DJ set from proprietor Eric- sublime. As always, fabulous service. A Hitchin must.

I'd go so far as to say this is the best pub in Hitchin. It's got a great country-feel, papers, roaring fire, very very good food. The wine is also better than average, particularly the French wine. A lovely way to spend a chilly Sunday afternoon.

Thank Carole E
