We decided to try somewhere different on our return to Porto Moniz and now wish we hadn't. The house of the whale has colourful seating outside, with large umbrellas. We decided to go inside. It is nicely laid out but the small round seats are as hard as nails. We ordered stuffed chicken breast and tuna steak, plus a portion... More

We stopped for a quick snack and a drink at lunch time whilst passing through Porto Moniz. It's opposite the lava pools. A cold beer and a Madeiran sandwich hit the spot. We didn't order anything fancy so can't comment on other fayre.

We tried several restaurants in Porto Moniz and all were good but this one may well be the the best. For a start it was relatively busy in early March, always a good sign compared to the stark emptiness of the other restaurants, so we thought it must be worth a try. Boy we weren't disappointed! All the Madeiran staples... More

Had a week in Madeira and had several meals with Black scabbard. It was very good. My wife's dorada was OK but not that tasty. Probably it isn't such a nice fish anyway. Good value, recommended by our driver, would return.

Stopped here for lunch. Staff very attentive. Food was good, freshly cooked and salads were not limp. Sat outside to watch the world go by. Better menu than the chips and burger places and parking close by.

Stopped there to eat after our dip in the swimming pool. Well worth a visit - the food is good, the service we received was good and reasonably priced

Entered just to take a coffee and discovered they had vegetarian plates in the menu. It was to early for dinner so decided to have a snack. The hot dog was a pleasant surprise, the vegetarian sausage was tasty.

My wife and I dined outside so I can't say what the internal ambience is like - but the food was excellent and the wine very reasonably priced.

Driving around the island in a hire car we looked for somewhere for lunch on this side of the island, passing a few restaurants offering burgers and sandwiches we came across the small village of Porto Moniz, adjacent to convenient parking there were a few options close together, one other on the water looked like disneyworld on a bad day, another not much better...
