Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First visit to this restaurant. We tried all the items recommended. The only thing we would go back for are the mussels and frites. Everything else we had was not bad but just ok. Nothing really impressed us. I do not think the rating shown...is warranted.More

We lived in Belgium for a few years and went here for lunch. The best food since we left Brussels. We recommend this place very highly. You won’t be disappointed with the moules and frites. We are definitely going back.

My husband and I met a group of friends here and although there were 10 of us, the service was fantastic. After finding parking - since Southtown can be very hard to find a place to park - we had a great time and a...great meal. Our wait staff and host were very patient in answering any questions we had about the menu, since we had never eaten here. The appetizers (an onion crepe and a crab meat and mushroom crepe) were delicious. My husband and several others had the steak and fries and said they were very good. I had the battered lobster tails and fries and loved it. Last but not least, we had a lemon tart for dessert. It was just indescribably delicious.More

Went in to this restaurant with friends who highly recommended it. I was not disappointed, everything I ordered from drinks to the starter, entree through dessert was very well prepared and tasted very good. I will definitely be going back anything I'm back in town.

Let me preface by saying that I have been eating here for over 10 years now. Sadly, however, I have had the misfortune of watching this place gradually go downhill. Some things will never change, such as: 1.) the extremely unpleasant, surly and indifferent man...who works the host stand and occasionally seats people, 2.) the filthy restrooms that apparently fails to be addressed, 3.) and last, but certainly not least, the decor has changed very little over the years. Quite honestly, is very sad and depressing. What definitely has changed over the years is that the food just plain stinks. I have been to Belgium and the Netherlands many times, and even have family who live in Brussels. The food here is not real Belgian food. This is food that has been morphed into sustenance that suits the American palate, that is to say extremely rich and salty. Hercule Poirot would certainly turn his nose up at this place! The wait staff has also changed. They used to be very friendly and engaging. Now, they must have taken a chapter from the playbook of that surly man who works up front, because they are not very friendly and seem very bored with their jobs. I have shoes that have more personality than some of these people. It does not make for a very inviting experience. I'm sorry, La Frite, but unfortunately I have tot ziens! Au revoir! Adios!More

A neighborhood staple, one wonders why? The food is tepid, not particularly inspired nor particularly Belgian. A place that calls itself after THE Belgian national street food - la Frite or potato fry - should at least present the little potato with brio, twice deep-fried...fried to a golden crisp (the fact Belgians use beef fat also contributes to their unique flavor and deliciousness). We also had moules or mussels... what pathetic little creatures they were: dull gray, small, served in a flavorless sauce versus the plump, briny, tawny color of a good mussel. The risotto that accompanied the undercooked duck was lumpy and dry versus the unctuous consistency one expects. The desserts were equally disappointing. An ile flotante or floating island is supposed to be a fluffy egg-white meringue on a bed of vanilla custard, not a poached egg white omelet in a bowl. All and all, this was not a particularly good experience and in a town with so many options, this one deserves a pass.More

Very nice visit at lunch. The frites are a must! The best fries you’ll ever eat. Good varied menu selections of Belgian/French items. Nice wine selection, and multiple styles of mussel preparations. Cool, quaint setting in Southtown.

This was recommended to us as a special place for dinner. Atmosphere was lacking. Food was not worth the price. Service was not that good. Also, the server was cussing out some guy for parking where he did - very unprofessional. Overall, this was not...as good as expected.More

We had different versions of the mussels with fries. I had the basques and my wife had the Thai. Both were extremely tasty. The fries were really good. The beer menu was very good. I had a blonde ale. Service was very good and attentive.

a capable kitchen and professional staff. they prepare excellent beef steaks and frite. the crab and mushroom crepe is a near miss as were the battered shrimp. mussels were served just lukewarm and were quite small - I don't know if this is a seasonal/climate...change thing or a purchasing/financial thing. not as favourable as I would have wished. unfortunately the escargot was overcooked - crumbly texture w no intense garlic butter taste - which is what escargot are all about. but - all in all, a good meal in a good bistro w about a 15 year history.More

We had not been here in over 5 years. This is not a white tablecloth French restaurant - it is a neighborhood Belgium bistro. Military, families with kids, singles - all come here for a good meal. La Frite specializes in mussels and frites, but...we can do that in Austin - snails, duck breast, chicken in puff pastry is what we ordered, and all were marvelous at a reasonable price. Good wines and European draft beers are also available. WE WILL RETURN! The only improvement that I would suggest --put some Jacque Brel on for music -- none of that modern stuff!More

Good vibes, not pretentious. Came here during our trip to S.A. for my wife's Birthday and had a wonderful dinner. She had the Hanger steak which was cooked to perfection and I went for a Mussels dish that was a combo of Chai and the...Basque as suggested by our waiter. It was heavenly. Frites were no big deal, just fries. Best meal we had during our stay in S.A.More

I lived in Brussels for a year and was pleased to have found a place that described themselves as Belgian. How disappointing. The server put us by the front door, even though there were plenty of empty tables inside. I persuaded my friend, who had...never eaten Belgian food, to try the Moules w/frites. My special of the day wasn't but I wouldn't have minded if the dish I recommended hadn't arrived as thought straight out of a microwave, warm on one side, cold on the other. The fries were not the chunky cuts of frites in Belgium but thin and oily. The one item I thought could not go wrong was a Stella, but it arrived in a straight glass, so cold it lost all flavor and without foam. Perhaps it's all down to previous experience as I see many raving about this place. I cede it to them willingly!More

Delicious sea food and very friendly staff. If you like mussels you’ll love it here, although my favorite was the battered lobster. Will definitely go back when in town.
