We stopped by when the restaurant was offering takeout only. We ordered by calling the number posted on the door. It was a bit of a wait, but the food was delicious! We enjoyed the steak fajita and chicken pesto pasta. Would recommend if you...are in Independence.More

I happen to live in Owens Valley -- and got married in the county courthouse across the street. But never stopped in before yesterday. Yes, the hours can be hit-or-miss, which fouled up at least one previous attempt; call ahead. Once 'in contact' it was...a joy. The proprietor is a character: an ancient of the kitchen and front-of-house, and pure, original French mein. His Algerian wife commands the kitchen. We caught only a glimpse. The food was quite good, especially the sweet potato pommes-frites. Maybe the best part is the art. The owner holds a large collection of oil landscapes by Victor A. Schiro; without the least shame I post his website here: victoraschiro (•) com . The best regionally and landscape-focused work I have seen. He knows his paint and he commands its virtue. Just that is worth a visit.More

French haute cuisine in little Independence, Inyo County? C'est magnifique! It is best to call ahead to confirm that they will be open when you get there. This is a small family operated establishment. It resembles a small French bistro with local artwork hanging on...the walls and artifacts decorating the dining rooms. The large menu is augmented by daily specials. Beer and wine are served. The onion soup is excellent, tasty and not salty with just the right amount of melted cheese. The lamb shank was a special for the night and ranks among the best I have had anywhere. The fall-off-the-bone lamb was tender and coated in a flavorful sauce. Served over a bed of beans and vegetables it was an enjoyable and filling meal. This is a comfortable place for a leisurely dining experience as the chef is also the hostess and waitress. Moderately price, a nice alternative to roadie diner fare.More

.. and we were. Boy, this is really a hidden gem on Highway 395. Still Life Café, is indeed lined with still lives on the wall—and Excellent art work it is, but this tiny family run bistro is a kick and a half. Madame, aka...Malik’s< reigns over th kitchen in th back.. she is of French and Algerian origin (and so am I).. The food is authentically French, escargot, end is braisées, delicious onion soup and all. Be sure to call before you head for this little gem, because the family sometimes takes a night off. Daughter is the waitress, Carlos the dog, and a very young grandson will entertain you too. Call ahead and make that a mandatory stop on your way north!More

Independence is a very small town and more or less one of the latest possibilities to sleep before entering the Death Valley. We didn’t expect to find anything for having dinner, but what we found was just amazing! The food was delicious and the serviceas...well as the atmosphere just excellent! But, you need to have time, as the mother is the cook and the daughter does the service! But it is very much worth the time and money!More

Im really hoping that the owners were having a bad day... A friend told me about thé Still Life Café, a French restaurant that was hit and miss, and told me to try it. Let me preface the review by saying that French food is...my favorite. I am a true Francophile. In my entire life, I have sent 4 dishes back to a kitchen in my life.. I will pretty much eat anything and everything, except for anything made with pork. The menu consisted of burgers, several dishes with ham and a pasta dish, the only French food was the French onion soup and thé Croqué monsieur e madame. Decided to order the onion soup. The cheese was burned on top, barely any onions, and it looked like the pepper pot was knocked over into the soup. No flavor except for a an acidic pepper taste. I sent it back saying there was too much pepper. Even the people next to us noticed the pepper! A couple came in, looked at the menu, asked a few questions about the menu and Left. A trio of people who were sitting next to us only ordered drinks and a salad. We paid and left a very nice tip btw, for the friendly service, and them putting up with my French. As we were leaving, The owner literally ran after us as we were entering our car to tell us how insulted she was that I didn’t like the soup, and told us never to visit the restaurant Again. I told her that the soup had too much pepper and they didn’t have really anything else on the menu I could eat, and she berated me because I complained about the soup having too much pepper in it. The positives: Nice art hanging on the walls, the cute (but crying baby in the back room), the dog, and a nice atmosphere. Thank I doubt I will be going back, even though I go through Independence often. So sad, because it is the only restaurant in this area. I can understand why the owner was upset, but even when a dish is sent back, an offer to make the experience better is offered- no such offer was made. Again, I sincerely hope they were just having a bad day.More

This is the ONLY restaurant in Independence. We were encouraged by the wonderful reviews and looked forward to the experience. We phoned to be sure they were open and were told that they would be open at 7- ish. We showed up at 7:30 and...the place was dark- no sign of life. No idea if they eventually decided to open because we drove 16 miles to Lone Pine to get dinner. They don’t seem to want customers.More

If you like a slower pace to your meal that allows you to soak up your surroundings coupled with good food and the comaraderie of your fellow guests make a point of taking in this restaurant. Part of the charm is the owners themselves, he...serves as waiter, wine pourer and supervisor of Carlos the dog who loves ear rubs and tidbits from your meal. She's the chef. There's a daughter and a granddaughter whose the best behaved baby you will encounter as well all set among small surroundings with paintings of the surrounding area to keep you entertained. Opening times require a phone call ahead of time and the restaurant will often an hour or so before the chef arrives. Just sit back and relax. The specials board is where you want to focus. There's something for everyone and if you don't see it ask if it can be made. Our first time we had the blue cheese burger and the flat iron steak both were delicious order an extra order of the pom frites they are perfectly cooked. Second visit hubby enjoyed the flat iron steak so much that he ordered it again and I had the spaghetti Bolognese. Again, both were delicious. It's a welcome relief to find a place that suspends time and allows you to focus on your meal and company. It's magical that it's in the tiny Hamlet of Independence with the Sierra Nevada Mountains as the backdrop.More

It's actually been more than a decade since I've been to the Still Life. My wife and I were married in Big Pine (about half an hour north of Independence on US 395) and we had our reception at the Still Life. They put on...an amazing spread for us although, aside from the caprese salad, I can't remember what we had, just that it was all magnificent. Part of my amnesia may be due to the delicious high octane sangria they served that went down a little too easy. I'm not certain but I suspect each pitcher may have started with half a bottle of cognac and my wife and I probably killed a whole pitcher of that wonderful elixir between us.More
