Some of the best soul food I had in awhile. Chicken and Catfish was on point. If you're in town, stop by 😀👍

Incredible catfish, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes. And the cornbread... It melts in your mouth. On a weeknight, I could only get a seat at the bar and the wait for a table seemed to be long. Totally worth it though. Bring your appetite.

Am a bona fide foodie and this is one of the best, if not THE best, soul food places around. It's tiny and we had a short wait for lunch. Delightfully friendly waitstaff and lady on the podium. Mains are huge and tasty we had the trout and pork chops with gravy on the side, both excellent. Good as they... More

Recent visit on a Thursday, when everyone else in downtown Richmond was craving Mama's foods. We knew going in the wait was going to be an hour. If you have the patience, the foods are well worth the time. Our table's foods consisted of chicken tender appetizers, hamburgers, fries, catfish, collards, mac and cheese, corn muffins, and the biggest winner... More

When you are at Mama J's, you know that you're getting real home cooking. I'm not a big catfish fan, and I love what Mama does to catfish. The greens here have great seasoning and character, and the mac and cheese is worth the calories! I've eaten in the restaurant and had the privilege of organizing and attending a private... More

The food at Mama J's is great, however, in most cases it just isn't worth the wait. Don't go unless you have 1-2 hours to spare.

We love Mama J's. They are so kind and accommodating to customers. The food is fantastic, reasonably priced and menu is not over whelming . I am gluten free and even though I cannot enjoy their delightful desserts they will fry my catfish in cornmeal alone so I can enjoy it. Veggies are fresh and delicious. Wonderful, friendly restaurant. Just... More

If you want some real soul food this is the place to. The portions are decent and the prices are average for what you get. Love the food but the place is a little run down (but clean)

We enjoy everything we ordered. But the best of all was the cakes. It was a delight to meet mama J. Can't wait to be back.

I've dined in and have done take out many times. The food is great! Catfish, string beans, mac and cheese, cornbread to die for. Clean and pleasant atmosphere. It's a small place so prepare to wait or take home to enjoy!
