We tried almost the entire menu in a span of several visits in 2 weeks. The ambiance and food were superb. I feel like I could eat here everyday. The cook's passion for creating a special meal shows in all of the dishes and I cant say enough about the entire experience. It was as if you were in Japan... More

I hadn't been back to this restaurant for quite a while, but I was downtown so I came by. This would be the first time that I had met the daughter who was working the front. She was very funny and boisterous. At the time I was the only customer inside, so it was nice that I was able to... More

Just went there tonight .. close to the Marriott hotel. We're in town for a couple of days waiting for weather to make it to Russia, and we found this spot .. close and convenient, and great unique atmosphere. Grandpa cooks, Grandma makes Gyoza, and Daughter is the waitress. Ramen soup was good, Spinach and Sesame salad was TERRIFFIC ..... More

She opened with..."let me explain to you..." Not really inviting. And when we were finally going to order...I said I wanted to start with appetizers...she said..."you need to understand that this is an REAL Japanese restaurant and there is only one cook...so you need to order your entire meal. There is limited space here." I was excited to try the... More

This place is not the Americanized Japanese food of many of us think of. It is authentic, small plates, cooked by grandpa, served by granddaughter, rung up by grandma. The smoked salmon is to die for.

We happened to come by this place on our way back from bike riding on the Coastal Trail. We got there at 5 and they had just opened. It is run by an older Japanese couple with their daughter waiting the tables. She explained that it was a traditional Japanese restaurant where the orders are prepared in the order that... More

SO glad I finally checked this place out! It is right next door to my church downtown, but I was never sure if it was open or not (I've walked by it for years!). Yamaya is definitely unpretentious, but WOW. The restaurant is run by a Japanese family and I doubt that you can find anything more authentic in Anchorage.... More

Read about this place & decided to try it. Highly recommended as the food is very delicious. Authentic Japanese! Service maybe slow but worth the wait. The chef was nice enough to let me take his picture!!!

This place is owned by an older Japanese couple and of course serve the real stuff. Service can be quite slow so don't come in a rush. The miso changes frequently and look for the specials on the board. The menu is written on paper on the walls. One side is small dishes and the other is the dinners. I... More

This is not a place to go if you are in a hurry. It is a great place to go with an open mind and desire to try new things and enjoy a relaxed, utterly delicious meal. The chef takes obvious pride in preparing your food to order in his small kitchen and presenting it with a smile. I had... More
