Excellent traditional cappuccino served by friendly knowledgeable baristas. Near U.Wash, but a little tricky to find in an interior back alley. Ancient brick building with lots of history (if you like that kind of thing).

If you want to experience what a true Seattle espresso cafe was like before Starbucks, then get a latte here. The buildings surrounding the cafe have changed and grown taller so the morning light is not what it used to be...but still the cozy atmosphere remains. The coffee is still good and the tables are good for hosting conversations among... More

I started drinking coffee here one year after it opened, and return every time I return to Seattle, which is every couple of years. What I especially love is the quite atmosphere and adequately good coffee. You can sit and read or compute long after your coffee is finished. The coffee is good, and the pastries, not so much. Some... More

Hidden Coffee shop that we went to because it was the oldest coffee place in Seattle. Probably should of stayed hidden. Coffee was just ok, staff was not very friendly, almost rude. Plenty of seats, which is a plus.

It is a little hard to find, the front of it is in an alley, always crowded and always good coffee. I have heard it is the first coffee shop to serve up "mixed coffee" drinks.

For being ranked the oldest espresso joint in Seattle, I expected a little better coffee. I did read the original Starbucks proprietor designed the Starbucks coffee product line from Cafe Allegro, so that explains the poor taste of both places.

Café Allegro's location in an alley just off the UW campus makes it convenient for University affiliated people. There are lots of seats and tables, many of which seem to be occupied by long-term users. We had no trouble finding seats, however. I had high expectations for this coffee house but found their coffee to just be average. My latte... More

The overall atmosphere of Allegro is very welcoming, warm and unpretentious. The fact that it is hidden in an alley makes it more special and it feels very authentic/alternative. I usually went here to study when I didn't feel like sitting in a place that was too quiet. Free wifi and lots of seating space made it a safe bet,... More

A quick word of clarification, because this listing seems to flummox the folks who run this site. Not to mention people posting reviews. The real Cafe Allegro is at 4214 University Way NE, just up an alley. It dates from 1975, and by some accounts it's Seattle's very first espresso joint. It remains excellent, a required stop on any coffee... More
