We ate here twice and I have to say the 1st time was better. Visit one we had crispy salmon sushi roll, Mahi Mahi and Hawaiian crispy snapper. Chocolate soufflé for dessert. Everything was amazing. 2nd visit we had Ahi sushi roll, snapper and Wagyu....I was disappointed in the Wagyu. It was nothing special at all...especially for $75! Chocolate soufflé for dessert again. The wine prices are way overpriced. Glass starting at $22 - $128. Cocktails from $22 - $60! Bottles from $85 - $9750 (2007 Screaming Eagle) The view is amazing. To me, if I’m spending this much on dinner I want a white table cloth not a placemat and rolled silverware. I expect the table to be “set” not brought over when you sit down. I liked our servers both times, they were not snooty or stuffy.More

Average. Not worth the price. Have said for many years, the menu doesn't change much. The menu has changed a bit, not for the better. Menu takes great food items and tries to transform them into unusual items. It doesn't work. Calimari wasn't over floured...as in the past but was greasy. Aoili had way too much garlic, made this sauce no longer delicate but overpowering. Kampachi was okay in coconut and clam broth but has been much better presented before. Kona lobster - terrible. Combining delicate lobster with an overpowering chili sauce ruins the lobster - why have lobster? The micro greens with this are good except for the huge chunks of jalapeno pepper. Delicate is destroyed again by over powering. We took leftovers and created a much better dinner tonight - noodles with lobster, greens, light carbonara/cheese sauce. Okay this is traditional, but it highlights the flavors of the ingredients rather than destroying delicate tastes and textures as was done by Ulu. Let the ingredients shine rather than covering them in overpowering sauces.More

My wife and I have now eaten here all three times we've vacationed on the "Big Island" and it's a tradition we plan to keep. The location, right on the water, is stunning. It's especially beautiful around sunset but be ready to reserve far in...advance for that time slot. The food is exceptional with delicious preparations of local seafood AND local land animals. A true standout, surprisingly, is the often-mundane mashed potatoes. Ulu's are more of a high-butter and cream puree with the additional fillip of having been prepared in part in a smoker. The taste is fit for any foodie. Add to these great features a staff that is attentive but never intrusive and you have a true five-star dining experience. Don't miss it!More

My husband and I dined at Ulu in February and it was a very special evening. The outdoor seating right on the ocean was spectacular, the service was amazing and the food was excellent. We like the Kauai Shrimp Dumpling appetizer which we shared. I...had the fish of the day special, my husband the short ribs and both were excellent. It's an expensive evening, but well worth the price for the memories.More

The setting at Ulu at the Four Seasons is perfectly beautiful at sunset Being just a few feet away from the white sand beach and the gentle sound of the waves enhanced the experience. We loved the roasted beet salad, braised short ribs, and the...charred hapu’upu’u. The ribs are the best we have ever tasted. Also, the olu’olu cocktail was very refreshing. All of this and wonderful service from a warm, knowledgeable staff made our dinner a pleasure.More

Honestly, were it not for the location and beautiful surroundings I would probably rate this a 1. I'm confident in saying that my wife and I caught the establishment at a bad time or maybe it was just our bad luck but the service and...the food were terrible. First, we arrived early for our reservation and took a seat on a nice couch next to the fire pits. The waitress asked us if we'd like to see a drink menu to which we said "yes". About 10 minutes later, realizing we weren't getting a menu, I went to the bar to order our drinks. It took another 10 minutes for the bar tender to get our drinks ready. As we sat there enjoying the waves the waitress never came over to say a word. She ignored us. No "Oh, I'm sorry" or "can I get you another drink". Maybe she was embarassed? Second, I ordered the NY steak and a glass of wine, my wife ordered the Crab Noodle. She received a bowl of noodles with a few bits of crab, not what one would expect from a high end restaurant. My steak was like cardboard and flavorless. Full disclosure, I typically eat grass fed meat, this wasn't grass fed. Terrible. Topping it off, the glass of wine - never showed up. Third - during our meal our waiter was spending a ton of time with a neighboring table. I got the sense they were frequent guests. That's cool. No problem except for during our entire meal (and my wife eats very slowly) he never came by to ask if everything was ok. Not once. Had he done that the disappointment could have been avoided. Well, at least I'd have my glass of wine. Poor service and poor attention. Anyway, in the end the waiter was quite gracious and wasn't going to charge us for the entre's. He tried. I give him credit but the damage was done. I did pay for my steak... I ate it. My wife ate the few bits of crab but there was an entire bowl of noodles left. I think they got the mix wrong. Should have been crab w/t noodles, not noodles with crab. We won't be going back. Honestly, when you put yourself out there as a quality, fine dining establishment you have to hit that mark for every time for every one of your guests. Ulu Grill missed the mark with us - badly.More

Main course was sea bass and the preparation was fabulous! We had two soufflé...for our special birthday celebration and they were cooked perfectly. I can’t wait to return. My sincere thanks to everyone at Ulu for making our birthdays so very special. Much Aloha, KathyMore

This was our first dining experience at 'Ulu and it was absolutely amazing! All the dishes were superb as well as the cocktails. Every dish had a beautiful presentation (even when we shared the dish) and the tastes were very, very good, using farm to...table local ingredients. Hannah was our server and she was efficient, friendly, and professional. Lovely young lady. I had the coconut chicken & mushroom soup (perfect) and one of the local fish (it was comparable to sea bass), also outstanding. The roasted avocado carrot salad was also very creative. All the wines and cocktails were top notch! And the ambience was over there top since the restaurant is on the beach with a perfect western view of the sunset. Unbelievable! This is a VERY expensive restaurant, but for a very SPECIAL night with superb service, I highly recommend the 'Ulu grill.More
