The outside is unassuming, to put it kindly. There's not much of a sign, except the big letters on the door: "No Spicy Tuna. No California Roll. TRUST ME" Inside, Sasabune is also pretty modest, with no fancy decor. But if you put yourself in the hands of the chef and let the waiter bring what he will, you will... More

I have eaten here on and off for many years and was looking forward to another outing. Either overall standards have improved elsewhere or the pixie dust hasn't settled on this place for a while. On this visit the place was just tired. I really wanted it to be good because I was starving but all the fish seemed to... More

i liked that it was an older japanese chef who served us the sushi, and we made our own saki tasting. all you get is top quality sushi and i'm a big eater, even I was full by the end of my tasting. it is expensive, and there's no razzle dazzle to the place. but if you love fish, and... More

What a disappointment and ripoff! At $140 person one expected the heights, not the bums rush. This may have been a very off night but the rushed service, pedestrian presentation and total lack of originality was a perfect storm. In all the 200+ restaurants I reviewed this one hit bottom! The only good thing I could say was the waiter... More

They order for you and tell you how to eat it and in what order and it is so delicious. Down side it's very expensive!!! But worth it probably...

Unpretentious venue serving the most impressive sushi. No menus, no pricing. Just eat every morsel the chef sends to your table in small plates of one to four bites. Not for the budget-minded, but worth the price. You don't go here for the ambience, but for some of the freshest and most skillfully prepared sushi you will find in the... More

This is my second time here in this rather unassuming location. First and foremost the food was out of this world!!! But when you pay $150 plus for a few pieces of fish, you would expect a little better atmosphere, and service. The service was basically non-existent and the restaurant looks like a cheap burger joint. The chef walked out... More

Not an attractive place, this is the charm of Sasabune. Outstanding japanese sushi. The staff is very friendly.

There are three Sasabunes in the US, including the original in LA. Stellar chefs, after many years of service, are permitted to use the Sasabune seal to start their own restaurants. Sasabune can be sublime, especially if Takahashi-san is working his magic behind the counter. I've been here perhaps ten times and only had a bad meal once. The sourcing... More

Great food, great service. Each plate was ready when we were done with the previous one. No one rushed us along. Great flavors, variety. It's a very small place. Clean, nicely done, not fancy.

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
