End up in here every time I go to New York. Reliably cheap ($3 beers, $2 in happy hour), $1 pop corn and cheap juke box ($1 for 4 songs). This bar never changes which is reassuring,it is a great find.

Not many downtown places that have $4 well drinks and very cheap beer all day long. The crowd is very friendly, the bartenders are cool, and the atmosphere defines "dive bar." What more could you ask for?

I went here with my hubby and friend who lives in NY. St. Mark's is her favorite street in NY and after spending some time in Grassroots I understand why. Drinks are cheap for NY, bartender was funny and personable. We are all from Philadelphia and he kept telling us we were the nicest Philly people he has ever met.... More

It's divey, the bartenders can be moody and sometimes it smells...and yet I find myself drinking here all the time. The prices are great and so is the jukebox. I think the bartenders get moody because so many obnoxious people (including myself) hang out here.

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
