The knishes my grandmothers would make were flayshick or pareve--chopped liver or kasha. The fillings were not dried out; the whole thing encased in dough. And they could be finished off in 4-5 bites. The freezer case 1-bite "cocktail" knishes today lack any taste and...More

We dropped by this place as it offered Knishes - a filling wrapped in a pastry dough. We had two - the original (mashed potato) and kasha or buckwheat filling. They were both delicious served hot and dipped in mustard. Very old decor. I believe...More

A very patient man waited while we debated the merits of ordering plain, mushroom and/or kasha knishes, and when we told him we wanted them to go, he whispered, "the mushroom is still warm" and tempted us to eat it on site. But we held...More

Personally I didn't Think these knishes were all that special. Way too much stuffing to a point where you barely taste the baked dough covering. This might be traditionally correct for East European food, however pretty bland and heavy for a snack.

We stumbled upon this place because we were staying at the Gatsby Hotel next door. You've got to visit and have a knish, choosing from sweet to savory. I've never eaten such light and flaky knishes. The bakery interior is quite the walk down memory...More

We had never had a knish but tried a cherry one with a cherry Dr. Brown's soda. We couldn't finish either but enjoyed trying it. They ship. There is a restaurant. There are several steps to get into the restaurant. It's small but there are...More

The shop itself is very much old-school LES. Layers of paint on the little glass bakery counter up in the front of store, squeaky dumb waiter hoisting knishes up from the cellar to refill the cases, a handful of tables if you opt for sitting...More

A knish is basically a ball of mashed potatoes surrounded by a thin layer of dough. It can be baked or fried with different vegetables mixed into the filling. Knishes gained popularity with immigrants in New York as a... More
