It's a must try-- hot dog topping choices are unusual and fun and everything is fresh and tasty. Plus, I was so psyched that they offer tater tots.. which are like finding a unicorn in NYC. Vibe is grungy and cool-- plus there is a secret bar that you can only enter via the hidden door in the back of... More

I come to Crif Dogs almost every time I am in Manhattan with friends. Either as a late night snack before I hope on the railroad back home, actual dinner, or food that I eat when I can no longer form sentences and I'm not feeling so classy. It's a little hole in the wall with old school games. I've... More

Crif Dog is a little whole in the wall located in the East Village area of Manhattan. I stumbled across this place completely by accident with a friend of mine. The place is small but has a retro feel to it sort of like the mid 80's. The workers are very welcoming and are use to people walking in late... More

Quirky little off the sidewalk mini diner in the West Village, bit of a walk to get to from the other side of town and even from the nearest Subway but we figured was worth the trip out. We stopped in about 4:30pm so a bit early to avoid any rush as we heard it can get packed out but... More

If you've never been here, schedule a trip NOW!!!! Get the spicy redneck, my favorite. And check out the phone booth while you are there.

While I can't say that I went to Crif Dogs for a Crif Dog, I can't say that while at PDT, my husband and I were convinced we needed one :) So, we ordered the chihuahua dog {bacon wrapped, and topped with avacadoes and sour cream!!!} and don't regret it one bit-- in fact, it was delicious!! After sharing it,... More

We were looking for veggie hot dogs all over new york, we found this place and were pretty excited! They also sell normal hot dogs! The veggie version was really good, the special one is nice and hot with jalapeños and the normal is just classic, tasty sides, friendly staff. Hidden Bar Entrance inside! On the other side of the... We shared 3 dogs; the chili dog, the jon-Jon deragon (cream cheese, poppy seeds) and chihuahua (avocado and mayonnaise) and tater tots. The first and last of those dogs were great but the reason why it gets 3 not 4/5 stars is because the Jon-Jon deragon is waaaay to salty to enjoy (despite being one of there most popular dogs)... Little hole-in-the-wall spot with GREAT hot dogs. Lots of interesting combos on the menu and huge selection to make your own. Awesome tater tots too, enough to share - we shared with folks we didn't even know! You might notice lots of activity at the phone booth inside the restaurant - check it out. (nothing bad, nothing adult, nothing illegal).

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
