We were staying in the Elysee Hotel so this restaurant was very convenient when the weather was bad and we couldn't guarantee getting to our first choice restaurant. We ate in the restaurant, not in the bar. The latter was very busy and noisy, like most NY bars, whilst the restaurant was quieter. The food was good and the service... More

What a delightful surprise to enter this restaurant, in the Elysee Hotel, which is a true throwback to the Jazz Age. Wonderful murals cover the walls, and my girlfriends and I loved sliding into one of the red leather banquettes. The service was polite and attentive without being intrusive, and the food was delicious. Great wine list. We enjoyed a... More

Atmosphere is from the old movie days and the Monkey Bar has a history that goes back to old piano bars. Great booths, art work, definitely a classic. The service was very good (only point is, take an extra second or 2 to not spill red wine while pouring on our table cloth, lowers the level of service) , the... More

Relive moments of Mad Men and/or Sex and the City with a visit to the iconic Monkey Bar in Midtown Manhattan. Service is top notch and the drinks were amazing. We were only there for drinks but I have heard that the food is half decent. Loved the entertainment and the people watching was an added bonus. We had so... More

We didn't eat in the dining room, since we were there late, but enjoyed a couple of drinks in the bar. The bar is not very large so we had to wait for a table, but our server was most helpful for this. Loved the creative drink menu and the monkey theme!

Expensive but fun atmosphere and very cool vibe. Drinks are at New York prices, food is really good and you can have a great meal for a reasonable price if you skip the drinks, but who wants to do that?! Restaurant week menu was worth the $42 price. Had the cauliflower soup, pasta with short-rib ragu and carrot cake for... More

Before we headed to NYC...I Googled restaurants near our hotel, the Omni Berkshire. During my research, I also discovered this place got great reviews for drinks, and those reviews were right! We arrived late, around 11:15 or so on a Friday night and the place was hopping! They stop serving food at 10, but we were just interested in post-theater... More

We arrived at the Monkey very late but the service had been nice and friendly. Great selection even at the bar. Lovely atmosphere and I discovered later it was a satc location.

Monkey Bar is just cool. It feels like you are dining in an episode of Mad Men. Very cool interior, funky mural, whimsical little monkey statues, nice private booths, not overcrowded. Oysters here were delicious. Great cocktails as well. I am partial to the bourbon smash. Delicious!

Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
