The restaurant is very stark and modern and I didn't expect to enjoy the round table with swivel chairs, and at first it felt more like an office meeting than a birthday dinner. However, the table was so roomy and the chairs so comfortable I soon forgot the look of the table and lost myself in the experience. We tried... More

A wonderful experience in all respects. Prompt, attentive service. Knowledgeable waitstaff. And food that combines wonderful flavors and textures. Clearly an upscale version of Scandinavian cuisine. The seafood offers unusual presentations of sometimes familiar fish, and great preparations of fish that is unfamiliar to American consumers. Highly recommended.

My wife and I have our hair cut right across the street from Aquavit and it is our habit to go to lunch to "celebrate". We sit at the bar. Comfortable and the service is great. We are a creature of habit and order the same thing all the time ( as noted below) but it is so good why... More

What a great night it was! A gastronomic heaven! Chef Emma Bengtsson is a food diva! The wine paring option is a must.

A great evening with delicious dishes, consistently inspired by the Nordics. Yet the whole atmosphere and especially the staff seem a bit misplaced there. I have been to all Nordic countries over and over again. The puristic style combined with the warmth of the locals make the trick. Here the design is hidden behind the many staff people who don't... We had our runaway wedding dinner here. Great food and great service. Our two boys still talk about the meatballs.

Aquavit never fails to delight. The food is absolutely outstanding although, as is often the case, the mains are somewhat overshadowed by the creative assortment of amuse bouches, the wonderful starters, the delicious palate cleanser and delicious deserts. The service is perfect. The dining room could use a bit of sprucing up as it is beginning to feel a bit... More

Our party loved the place and we found the staff friendly and they met all our requests. As our friend is a chef, we asked to meet the owner, who was very friendly and spent some time with us. The main waiter was very nice and from South America, so he and our Colombian friend really got along well. We... More

I agree with other reviewers... service is mechanical and stiff - even a bit theatrically weird. The decor, although tasteful and interesting, adds to the austere atmosphere. I really wanted to love this restaurant because of its 2 Michelin stars. During the course of the tasting menu, I occasionally did. Most dishes were lost on me though. Overall, it was... More

Restaurant Aquavit opened to immediate success in midtown Manhattan in November 1987. More than two decades later, Aquavit continues to be one of New York's most popular and highly esteemed dining destinations. A pioneer on the American dining scene, Aquavit remains the only world-class modern Scandinavian restaurant in the country, and was also the first restaurant in New York to house two concepts under one roof: a casual bistro serving hearty, simple fare and a formal dining room offering refined, modern Scandinavian cuisine. Owner Håkan Swahn has always been involved with every aspect of the business, and his passion and vision are what steer the restaurant. Executive Chef Marcus Jernmark is in the kitchen every day, where his talent and his commitment to quality and authenticity are apparent in every ingredient he purchases and every dish he prepares. Swahn and Jernmark collaborate closely on Aquavit's menus, and together they provide leadership and inspiration to the team at Aquavit.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
