Highly recommended by many of my friends i went there with great expectations but was disappointed with their brunch. Small portions but high prices. Smoked salmon and baked eggs were really dry and so were the waffles with fresh fruit.. Coffee is good though.

Cafe Gitane holds a special place in my heart since it was my first date with my husband 18 years ago. I'm delighted it is still there but not surprised. It is a very stylish, very intimate cafe in a very walkable downtown neighborhood. Great place to rest your feet and enjoy the NY vibe.

Went there for a quick dinner a Thursday evening and had a unpleasant experience. Got a table for two and ordered chicken Satay and my wife had a veg-burger and we both enjoyed the food. Asked for the check and paid. Left more than 10% tip which I thought was quite alright. The waitress came back and told me that... More

This was not our first time at cafe Gitane...but I won´t go back there anymore. Last week we went for dinner and I had a Cous Cous that was overcooked. My husband had the baked pasta, that was dry and hard, and burned on top. He sent it back and asked for the salmon casserole that wasn´t good either. Very... More

I really enjoyed Cafe Gitane near Elizabeth Street. The paw on the coffee is so cute, perfect for Instagram moments! I had mine with Josefinas sneakers of course!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant late Thursday night near closing.... we were greeted with a huge smile upon entry and the service never stopped! The staff in this place are warm and very charming! The food was AMAZING!!! The food is North African ( Moroccan). Dinner was a success!

We had a toast with avocado (yummm!), salad and salmon bagel. Everything was very tasty and you could tell the food is very fresh. Atmosphere is lovely, and the coffee is great. Highly recommended!

Very nice cafe with original New York style. If you visit Nolita you need to stop and have espresso or a nice Starter/ meal. Also it was filmed in the movie Begin Again.

Petite Soho brunch/coffee venue for trendy New Yorkers in the know. Bowie lived around the corner. French magazines hang on wall racks with photos of Jean Morreau. Large mirror on the back wall reflects Villagers coming and going. Healthy breakfasts include avocado toast with fried egg on top (Madame!) so tasty you'll order another. Decent coffee too - mais bien... More

Likeable Nolita classic. Food is "cute" and Sex-and-the-City style (the baked eggs could have been tastier, the avocado bread was fantastic), service is friendly. No wifi which may be a no-no for international travellers.

Staying in Nolita

Neighbourhood Profile
Despite being just off of busy Houston Street, Nolita maintains a low-key vibe that makes it a pleasant retreat in the heart of lower Manhattan. Short for “North of Little Italy,” Nolita was once considered to be part of Little Italy. Today, the neighbourhood is popular with young fashionistas popping in and out of the chic independent boutiques that line Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets. In addition to shopping, there are cozy restaurants and sidewalk cafes serving everything from new-school Italian food to the world-famous cronuts. While small in size (Nolita stretches just a few blocks in each direction), it’s a great neighbourhood to spend an afternoon people watching, window-shopping, and grabbing a bite to eat.
