Went here to try takoyaki and the consistency was much different than I expected. The flavor was good but it was very gooey inside so I was not a big fan. I think that's just how it is supposed to be. It was a nice experience to try it. They do have yummy taiyaki filled with red beans that are... More

We stopped by today to try some Okonamayaki. I spent 6 years on Okinawa and never had any . We got one pork and one shrimp and they were good, not great but good. There was a lot more shredded cabbage than I thought there would be but it was quite good. The food was prepared quickly and it was... More

I didn't have high expectations, but for a place that has 4 items on their menu (takoyaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and medetai), I am going to assume you do them well. I gave the takoyaki and okonomiyaki a shot, but they were, to be honest, not good. The takoyaki was large, but mostly starch and very little tako. The okonomiyaki felt... More

This is one of the tons of cool places to eat in East Village! We had a blast running from one shop to the next-got the Takoyaki here; so good! Not much of a seating area but that's common for the area. Worth the visit!

This is one up from a hole in the wall - its a small standup with a bench outside, but you are here for the Takoyaki. All very Japanese and really very good. Ordering is easy if you are not fluent - there is a Combo option to make life easy. They make the little octopus balls in front of... More

Otafuku is a great place for snack after one has dinner around. The Takoyaki is amazing, squid inside. The place is hidden and tiny, there is not enough seats, or even enough space for people to stand, that's why Otafuku is always crowded.

So Otafuku used to be a hole in the wall kind of place but moved to bigger location not too far away from its original 9th St location (St. Marks' area). Not too many places offer takoyaki or okonomiyaki or even yakitori (otaisho in St. Marks). So by default, this is one of the few places for this Japanese street... More

Every person who I've introduced this eatery has been shocked that they've never tried nor discovered the tasty offerings. I actually eat here about once a week and order the combo special comprised of Takoyaki & Okonomiyaki... I always feel fat, dumb, and happy afterwards LOL I don't know anywhere else who prepares fresh Takoyaki besides here since I know... More

This is a really small place with only a bench outside for seating but the food is definitely worth it. I'd say it's probably almost always packed inside here because the line circled the whole place when I was there. I got a takoyaki + okonamiyaki combo meal with a medetai for dessert. It was all great! A ton of... More

I apology if I am too picky. I was desperate for some good takoyaki and then I heard about this place. Although it was very quick(I didn't wait at all), and my takoyaki did come with a large size and a lot of bonito flakes, the flavor was not impressing at all. It tastes like BATTER combined with ginger and... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
