Can't decide if it's the ambiance, the service or the food. Or maybe the Sangria!! The overall decor is rustic and fun. The service is fast and the server was hot (at least as hot as the salsa). I got the ridiculously strong and delicious Sangria right away then had chicken fajitas, which I chose due to the hot server's... More

I'm a burrito snob and I know New York City is not the epicenter of good Tex Mex, but Tortuga makes a good burrito. A wee bit on the salty side but I've eaten here so many times. Recommended.

I was a fan of Paquitos on Third Avenue and 16th St., which has been closed for a little while now. I like the Paquito's on First and 9th Street, but it's too far outside of my lunch travel circle. Astoundingly, when I took a closer look on 14th St., I found the Hotel Tortuga and decided to give it... More

Tortuga is a small genuine taqueria with excellent food in a small, cozy environment. On top of the good food, the restaurant has good music to enjoy.

Stopped for a late dinner after a show at the DR2 Theatre. Great service, amazing food -- vegetarian and omnivores alike were thrilled!

The BBQ tempeh burrito with refried beans was incredible. I loved the whole "self service" chips and salsa, something I wish more places did. Pretty busy and had a hard time getting the waiter, but other than that it was fantastic.

On our first night in NYC, we had dinner here. Our server was so kind and good at her job. She gave us one of the best customer service experiences we had in New York. The food was super tasty - lots of veggie and meat options. The quality was good, the portions were generous and the prices were good... More

I stumbled on this place on a rainy New York afternoon, looking for somewhere to get dry. The décor is bright and colourful, full of drawings pinned to the wall (most by kids, from the looks of it). It was hard to choose what to eat, the menu was so comprehensive. They have a great lunchtime special too, where you... More

Excellent Vegan and vegetarian Mexican food with an authentic taste at a reasonable price. The owner also chooses a great selection when featuring Vegan cake for dessert!

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
