Had an accident this day so couldn't complete a full tasting menu but what I had as a selection from the menu was wonderful - top Portuguese food deserving of its ratings and Michelin hat.

Aldea is a Michelin one star Portuguese restaurant so I had high expectations. I was seated at the bar facing the kitchen. Normally, I would order a tasting menu but I preferred what I could get ordering a la carte. I ordered two appetizers and an entree. My first appetizer, a foie gras dish, was very good. I wasn't as... More

We attended New York magazine's New York Taste earlier this month; 50 restaurants offered a taste of their menu. Aldea created a very special dish of "porridge" with smoked mussels that was superb. The dish inspired me to smoke my own mussels; the canned version are basically inedible to my taste. Technique: steam the mussels and remove them immediately when... More

This restaurant has a Michelin star and cooks Portuguese food so we decided to try it when in NY. We chose the 4 courses dinner menu and the highlights were: Bacalhau a Bras (starter), Polvo (1st dish), the Monkfish which was tender and crispy with a fennel flavor. The menu is composed by several portuguese dishes with a Chef signature... More

I thought long and hard on that title! The attention to detail remarkable! That alone should earn them the highest rating. The plates may look small, due to so much flavor your mouth and brain can only take. The food was amazing, everything worked well together from the recommended drinks to deserts pairings. This is a true gem of the... More

I ate here at least once a few years ago and remember it as quite good. The decor is nice and service attentive, as I remembered, but almost half the dishes we ordered were disappointing. We had the four course dinner, starting with an urchin toast and a plate of sardines. The sardines were excellent, but the toast was a... More

Loved the food. Which is Portuguese fare. Primarily seafood. And some spice. We had a wine pairing which pushed the price point up but it was plea rent. The editors still could use a bit more training but generally were good. Dishes were finished well and described well. The physical plant is quite lovely and a plus For the ambiance.

This is a non pretentious restaurant with amazing cuisine and laid back environment. They offer ala carte or the chef's menu. The ala cart choices were all wonderful. The service was good.

We came back to Aldea for a fabulous dinner to celebrate my husband's birthday with our 3 young adult family members. We all had the 4-course prix fixe ($79) and enjoyed two wonderful bottles of wine (a Portuguese Rose and a Spanish Rioja), in lieu of the wine pairing option ($49). Among the 4 of us we must have eaten... More

The food was amazing. Compared to other Michelin restaurants the prices were competitive and even in the low end with wine pairings. The Chefs tasting menu had a great tour of Portuguese dishes with modern twists. The restaurant itself is small and cozy.

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighbourhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets- much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighbourhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being the home of a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
