Once home of great fried chicken and beer cheese -- pretzels weren't bad either -- now closed. Rent increases and the chef and founding partner has moved to Colorado. Place was clearly out of business during my walk last week. According to a sign, East Side Tavern has applied to open there in 2017.

This is a neighborhood go to place for me and my friends. The handmade soft pretzels with beer cheese are to die for! The restaurant is very small so go to their website and make reservations. Wine list is reasonable and good and there is a full bar. My personal favorite is Shrimp and Grits. You can order it in... More

My wife saw this restaurant on one of the food stations and wanted to try it. We were in NYC this past weekend and went with my son and his girlfriend. The restaurant showed off their soft pretzels and this is what she ordered as an appetizer. Yes, the pretzels were good but 2 small pretzels for $11 was unbelievably... More

Friendly staff. The restaurant could use a thorough cleaning. (duct tape around the window - velvet seating worn) Would recommend the pretzels, fried chicken, pork shop and grits. Limited menu but what they have on the menu they do well. Perhaps they would put beignets on the menu. Personal taste not a fan of bread pudding, crumble or Alaskan cake.

This is a small cozy place in the lower East Village. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives a few years ago. DDD showed the AMAZING home made pretzels and cheese dip and shrimp and grits. We eat at The Redhead every time we are in NYC and it is still wonderful. The pretzels are to die for and... More

Came here as it was close to a show we were seeing and had heard good things about their food. Barman was good but unfortunately the waitress ruined the experience by being pushy, rude and unfriendly throughout most of our meal. She also didn't replace our small plates for the second set of appetizers we had ordered. As or the... More

This is a popular place, a little off the regular destination and worth the detour. The menu is short - about 4-5 starters and 4-5 mains. All are imaginatively prepared and nicely served by pleasant wait staff. The wine list is limited but of good value and variety. Only drawback is the rather high noise level. It is probably wise... Visited last night with my wife and we were both blown away by the food, the buttermilk fried chicken especially. Couldn't recommend it more.

We had a really nice meal. The drink menu was unique and thoughtful. One of us got the Pimms Ginger beer cocktail. I got a nice IPA draft. We started with the bacon peanut brittle and the pretzels. Would definitively recommend the pretzels. We then shared the Low country shrimp which was out of this world good. We had to... More

The Redhead !!!! - This place can get very busy on Friday and sat, So if you are intending on dropping in these days be forewarned. At first just a bar and gradually food service added later, chef owner Meg Grace has done a remarkable task. We of course came here for their chicken and were not disappointed. The Redhead... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
