First comment is to make sure you have reservations! We didn't but it was just 2 of us so we were able to eat at the bar, and the bar tender was more than knowledgeable on helping us choose food! We both got pizza and...More

This place was my wife's pick for anniversary dinner. Great food. Hostess asked if we were celebrating some occasion. Server brought complimentary champagne when he was told it was our anniversary. We both had entrees that had freshly made pasta. Combination of great service, amazing...More

Cucina Urbana was an excellent choice for a business dinner for a party of five. We were intrigued by the "wine corner" where you can select your own. After a bit of deliberation we moved from a promising Italian Barolo to a Willamette Valley Pinot...More

A local recommended Cucina Urbana and it was wonderful. We were there on a Tuesday night and instead of waiting for a table sat at the communal table. Waitress was great. Food fantastic. Excellent pasta with ragu and other entree was red trout which was...More

We tried Cucina Urbana on a recent trip. My only regret was that I didn't go back a few more times. As others have reported, it was a great experience. We had reservations which were promptly honored and were brought to a nice table. The...More

We ate twice at Cucina Urbana on our recent trip to San Diego. Both times it was crowded, so make a reservation, even on a week night. The food was excellent, although we liked the pastas better than the veal entree. The service is impeccable,...More

If you are coming from NYC (like us) and expecting 'standard' upscale Italian (whatever that is), this place is not where you find it. At least, not what you would find in NYC. Anyhow, that's neither here nor there, but we always have expectations. So,...More

We were a bit surprised by how affordable the entrees were - as our first nice meal in San Diego after arriving from Arkansas we were expecting some sticker shock. The dining room is stylish with a warm ambiance, but also close quarters and loud....More

We're back in San Diego and hitting our favs.its always great to be ensured that restaurants we enjoyed previously have maintained their high standards. We start with a fantastic sangria, the sangria of sangrias, red wine based but truly delicious. As we're headed for a...More

This place is a block from the entrance to Balboa Park and it's an easy bus trip from Market Street, on the #3 bus. It is beautifully appointed and the staff is friendly and efficient. We tried a beet and avocado salad, a margarita pizza,...More

CUCINA urbana is a California inspired Italian Kitchen and Wine Shop. Owner Tracy Borkum's flair for combining great ambience, award-winning cuisine and unparalleled service are once again starring components in this Urban Kitchen Group creation. The restaurant is being heralded as the leader in the new regime of affordable dining in San Diego and has been the subject of praise from numerous local and national publications.

The restaurant's interior evokes a modern kitchen combined with the history and comfort of an old rustic country farmhouse. A touch of home, splash of bohemia and many objects new and old attract the eye. A focus on raw, sustainable material and reclaimed local material is found throughout. Discarded fence boards recovered from San Diego county wrap columns, walls, service stations and the back bar.

Chef Joe Magnanelli's menu offers affordable selections of vasi + antipasti + boards + insalate + pizza + pasta + piatti + dolce.

His whimsical expression of Italian classics coupled with the use of the freshest local produce, and organic and sustainable products comprise a diverse menu with all items at or below $20. Whether dining traditionally or 'family style', guests have become hooked on favorites such as stuffed fried squash blossoms, ricotta gnudi, braised black cod and veal piccata.

Wines of 'The Americas,' including California, Washington, Oregon, Argentina, Chile and Italy are among the major wine-producing regions offered in CUCINA urbana's retail priced Wine Shop. Guests are invited to visit the restaurant's retail area to select a bottle for lunch or dinner (a corkage fee of $8 applies) or purchase wine to go.

Additionally, CU plays host to a monthly 'Winemakers Series,' where guests are invited to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, taste a variety of wines and mingle with a winemaker in a casual, informal setting.

- Strong commitment to seasonality + sustainability
- organic + local product used whenever possible
- wines from the Americas and Italy - sold at retail pricing
- special discounts for cases of wine to go!
- Local artisan beers + italian favorites
- housemade infused liquors + specialty cocktails
