This place is living on its reputation. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and the place was dirty. The trash containers were overflowing, the chicken soup was greasy and the bread was at best ordinary. There are great bakeries around Boston such as Clearflour and HiRise, unfortunately this is not one of them.

Fornax is justly known, locally, for its great choices of fresh breads -- and the sandwiches on which you can sample these breads are great. The pastry selection is considerable and delicious.

They have this half sourdough bread that is just fabulous. Many sourdoughs can be too sour and somewhat off putting. Not these guys, the crust is very crusty and the inside very soft and moist. The taste has that slight sourness to it that doesn't turn you off. I typically get the whole loaf, which is pretty big and have... More

We were ravenous and in search of a quick lunch--Fornax fit the bill. Although they don't have a lot of seating, we were able to find a table when we showed up around 2pm. For those with a smaller appetite, a half-sandwich is possible. My grilled cheese satisfied that craving. Self-serve water pitcher is available in the 'fridge. Lots of... More

The beautiful interior of this small bakery / lunch place is charming, with decorations and art for sale changing frequently. Breads and scones here are excellent. Pastry tends to be a little heavy. Quick service in the mornings if you want to grab an excellent coffee and a ginger scone or oat cakes.

I've been going to fornax for years, and I still think they have the best coffee (both hot and cold brew) out there. Yes their sandwiches aren't always fabulous, but you can never go wrong with the ham and cheese croissant, a cupcake, or an 'oreo' cookie. Their breads are AMAZING, and their specialty goods for the holidays can't be... More

I almost feel like I'm going to an art gallery when I visit Fornax. They treat bread like the special baking craft that it is. Enjoy a sandwich or a slice in the funky restaurant and bring some home for later. I hope I haven't made this sound intimidating...the people are friendly and you'll find it easy to choose a... I think there were a total of 8 customers and three staff still couldn't handle the pressure. Ham and cheese baguette had ham but no cheese. Macchiato took ten minutes to make. Ultimate insult was the butter cream frosted chocolate mini cupcake we bought to go, stale. No excuse for stale product in a bakery.

Tiny Roslindale Village is in transition. Some business concerns are old-timey, some are what you expect with gentrification. Fornax Bakery is in the latter category. Excellent bread and baked goods, decent coffee and some delicious breakfast plates. Now you're paying for the good bread. A loaf might set you back some. But it's really good. I also thought the baked... More

If you are passing through Boston and need a great loaf of bread or awesome sandwich, definitely get to Fornax. Located in Rozzie village, you will not be disappointed.
